Mel Gibson’s ‘Passion of the Christ’ Sequel to Start Shooting This Summer at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios

“The Passion of the Christ” will resurrect this summer.

Mel Gibson’s highly anticipated sequel, named “The Resurrection of Jesus Christ,” is set to begin filming in August at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, as announced by the CEO, Manuela Cacciamani.

In a conversation with Italian financial daily Il Sole 24 Ore, Cacciamani revealed that Gibson and Icon Productions are planning to commence shooting for the sequel to his 2004 blockbuster “The Passion of the Christ” in August. This film, which was a massive success as the highest-grossing independent movie ever made.

Multiple reliable sources have informed EbMaster that “The Resurrection” is set to begin filming in summer 2025. The primary production will take place at Cinecittà’s expansive Studio 22 facility, much like “The Passion” did before it. Following suit, “Resurrection” plans to film in the historic southern Italian town of Matera, similar to how “The Passion” was shot. Additionally, director Mel Gibson is anticipated to film the sequel in other ancient Southern Italian rural areas, such as Ginosa, Gravina Laterza, and Altamura, among others.

Actor Jim Caviezel is likely to reprise his role as Jesus in the movie “The Resurrection.” Additionally, Maia Morgenstern, known for her portrayal of Jesus’ mother in “The Passion,” and Francesco De Vito, who previously played Peter, are rumored to be involved as well. This information is based on reports from IMDb.

There was no comment from Gibson’s publicist, Alan Nierob.

On Joe Rogan’s podcast in January, Gibson characterized the movie (obviously portraying Jesus’ resurrection) as a “psychedelic journey,” expressing that he had never encountered anything similar to the script he co-wrote with Randall Wallace, who also worked on “Braveheart.

In an interview with the National Catholic Register in 2022, Gibson explained that the concept of “Resurrection” isn’t a straightforward storyline. Instead, he believes it’s essential to interweave the central event with events happening concurrently in different timelines, including the past, future, and other dimensions, which gives it a somewhat science-fiction feel. He further emphasized that to fully capture the essence of the narrative, one must delve into the fall of angels, taking us to another world, another realm, and even to hell.

Following its debut in 2004, “The Passion of the Christ” – Mel Gibson’s portrayal of Jesus’ last days leading up to his crucifixion – garnered the title of the highest-grossing independent film ever made, earning a staggering $612 million at the global box office. Despite criticisms labeling it as antisemitic due to its depiction of Jewish leaders as responsible for Jesus’ execution, the controversy surrounding the film actually stirred more interest. This led to numerous churches reserving entire theaters for their parishioners to watch it together.
