Mel Gibson Meets Italian Culture Minister in Matera While Prepping to Shoot ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’

Mel Gibson is getting ready in Italy for filming his follow-up to “The Passion of the Christ.” Like the initial movie, this sequel will employ the historic, southerly Italian town of Matera as its setting. The town has warmly welcomed him, with Italy’s Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli extending an invitation.

According to earlier reports, the film “The Resurrection of the Christ,” which is being developed by Gibson, Bruce Davey, and their company Icon Productions, in partnership with Lionsgate Studios, will begin filming in August at Rome’s Cinecittà studios. These studios will act as the primary location for Gibson’s next project, a sequel to his 2004 biblical movie hit.

Giuli, part of Italy’s conservative administration, revealed on Thursday that he had a friendly encounter with Gibson, known as one of U.S. President Donald Trump’s entertainment envoys, primarily to capture a memorable photograph along with a handshake and some cordial conversation. The aim was to motivate significant Italian and global productions to carry on creating in Matera, this exceptional film-making hub of the world, as Giuli further explained.

In 2004, a significant portion of “The Passion of the Christ” exteriors was filmed in Matera, a location recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. This city is renowned for its ancient whitewashed caves and has recently become popular among major Hollywood productions. Some of these include portions from the 25th James Bond film “No Time to Die”, the 2016 remake of “Ben Hur” by MGM, and Warner Bros’s “Wonder Woman”.

Apart from Gibson’s visits to Pompeii, he has been observed exploring other historic, rural sites in the South of Italy too, such as Ginosa, renowned for its rock-hewn churches, Gravina Laterza, and Altamura.

It’s anticipated that Jim Caviezel will reprise his role as Jesus in the movie “The Resurrection.” Additionally, Maia Morgenstern, known for her portrayal of Jesus’ mother in “The Passion,” and Francesco De Vito, who played Peter, are rumored to be involved as well, according to IMDb.
