69-year-old Gibson and 78-year-old Glover were both present at an event over the weekend. They took part in a fan panel where they discussed the upcoming film “Lethal Weapon 5,” which is currently being developed. The sight of these two actors together again was certainly a significant moment for the fans who attended, while photos from the panel have since been circulating online, allowing others to catch a glimpse of their reunion. In 1987, I found myself captivated by the explosive debut of “Lethal Weapon” at the cinemas. Directed by the skillful Richard Donner, this action-packed masterpiece introduced us to an unlikely duo from the LAPD – the rugged and reckless Martin Riggs, played by Mel Gibson, and the seasoned but cautious Roger Murtaugh, also Gibson. The film’s success was so immense that it spawned a franchise, with Gibson and Danny Glover reprising their roles in three subsequent films. Donner remained at the helm for all four movies in this high-octane series. Interestingly, a TV adaptation of the franchise aired on Fox from 2016 to 2019, featuring new faces stepping into these iconic roles.

Lethal Weapon 5 Is Slowly in the Works

For quite some time now, whispers about a fifth Lethal Weapon movie have circulated. However, these plans never seemed to gain any substantial momentum, and it appeared the franchise was dead in the water following Richard Donner’s passing in 2021. Yet, in an unexpected turn of events, Mel Gibson announced his intention to take up the director’s helm for Lethal Weapon 5 as a tribute to Donner. He also confirmed that Danny Glover would be by his side, with both actors reprising their iconic roles on screen once more. The delay in production, as Gibson has hinted in the past, seems to stem from the project repeatedly encountering setbacks.

Last year, when asked about the order of release for Lethal Weapon 5 or The Resurrection of Christ, Gibson replied with a chuckle, “To be honest, I’m not sure. Making a film involves overcoming numerous challenges, not just financial ones. There are countless reasons why something gets made and why it doesn’t. So, it’s a bit like playing Russian roulette to predict which one will come out first.

It was eventually discovered that the response to that question was “The Resurrection of the Christ,” a project scheduled for filming this year. Let’s hope that “Lethal Weapon 5” can also manage to break free from its long-standing production difficulties.
