Today, The Pokémon Company unveiled a fresh Mega Pokémon during their Pokémon Presents presentation – the highly anticipated Mega Dragonite for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. This is thrilling news on several fronts. Firstly, this upgrade not only empowers an enduring classic and beloved Pokémon with a new skillset, but it strongly suggests that Pokémon Legends: Z-A will feature even more brand new Mega Pokémon yet to come. Previously, no new forms or Pokémon had been disclosed.

Pokémon Presents reveals Mega Dragonite, proving that Pokémon Legends: Z-A will have more Mega Pokémon

In a surprisingly lengthy span of twenty-four minutes, the Pokémon Presents event stood out as one of the longer presentations in recent years. The majority of the showcase was dedicated to smaller announcements, such as updates on Pokémon GO, Pokémon Masters EX, Pokémon Unite, and additional projects. Believe it or not, there were even updates on two stop-motion animated TV series. The presentation also sneakily launched a new Pokémon puzzle game, titled Pokémon Friends, for both Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. This uncomplicated puzzle game appears to be designed for a younger demographic, yet presents a fresh puzzle every day to challenge players. We also caught a glimpse of the upcoming battle-centric game, Pokémon Champions.

“The upcoming game in the Pokémon series, titled Pokémon Legends: Z-A, is scheduled to release towards the end of 2025 on both Nintendo Switch and its successor, Nintendo Switch 2. The new console will likely offer an enhanced version of the gameplay. Intriguingly, this installment takes place in Lumiose City from the Pokémon X and Y games, which was where Mega Evolution was initially introduced. Given this background, it’s logical to expect that the Mega Evolution mechanic could reappear in this game.”

Today’s demonstration revealed many familiar aspects of the game, yet it unveiled a few novel elements. Players will become part of a team named Team MZ, joining forces with other trainers. They will undertake missions inside the city to assist Emma, a detective, and will have the ability to modify their character’s appearance, from hairstyles to attire. It seems there might be something similar to Gym Battles as you progress in Z-A Royale, encountering increasingly tough trainers on your climb up the ranks. The presentation introduced Corbeau, the leader of the Rust Syndicate, as a potential adversary.

To put it simply, an intriguing occurrence is taking place within the city limits. It seems that ordinary Pokemon are spontaneously undergoing a mysterious transformation known as Mega Evolution. This transformation leads to intense battles in the arena, where trainers must confront these powerful mega Pokémon. In the latest trailer, we were introduced to the new Mega Dragonite. Much like other Mega Evolutions, its appearance will take some time to get accustomed to. Mega Dragonite boasts large wings on its head and a long tail with a pearl at the end, which resembles its earlier evolutions, Dragonair and Dratini. This creative use of Mega Evolution is intriguing because Dragonite has always been distinct from its previous forms, and this evolution brings them more in line in some aspects. At present, we are unaware of any additional details regarding Mega Dragonite’s modifications, such as changes to its type, abilities, or anything of that nature.

The upcoming game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, is nearly here, which means we’re likely to learn more details soon. With this upcoming release, the probability of brand new mega evolutions has never been greater. This essentially ensures that the starter Pokémon will also receive mega evolutions, so expect to see Mega Meganium, Mega Feraligatr, and Mega Emboar in action. In a similar vein to how gave each starter a unique regional form exclusive to its game’s region, it’s possible that Legends: Z-A might do the same, but at minimum, they will likely receive a mega form.
