Meet The Three Starters In Pokemon Legends Z-A

At the Pokemon Presents event held in February 2025, it was unveiled that gamers will have a selection of three starting Pokemon in Pokemon Legends Z-A – these include Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile.

To this point, we only know about the three starting Pokémon in the game. In Pokémon Legends Arceus, the starters had unique final evolutions for Hisuian region, each with distinct types compared to their initial forms. As of now, it’s uncertain if the starters in Pokémon Legends Z-A will also have alternate final evolutions.

It’s been confirmed that Nintendo is bringing back Mega Evolutions, so there’s a chance the starters might get them too. Previously, some Pokémon like Mega Ampharos and Pinsir underwent type changes when they Mega Evolved, with Ampharos becoming Electric/Dragon instead of just Electric, and Pinsir turning into Bug/Flying rather than remaining pure Bug.

Let’s examine the details we currently have on the three starting players, and discuss possible adjustments that Legend Z-A might introduce for each one.

Chikorita

In simpler terms, Chikorita is a Grass-type starter introduced in Generation 2, but it’s often ranked as the weakest of its group, and even among all starters historically. This is primarily because Meganium, its final form, has limited move options and average stats. However, if Meganium were to receive a Mega Evolution or an alternate form, it could significantly enhance its performance.

Nintendo might emphasize Meganium’s reptilian features further by adding a Draconian element as a secondary type. Currently, Meganium learns certain Dragon-type moves like Dragon Tail and Outrage, but having a dual Dragon type would boost these attacks by 50% thanks to STAB, or Same Type Attack Bonus. This enhancement would make Meganium more effective offensively.

Meganium primarily focuses on defense, and having a Dragon type could bring some advantages and drawbacks. On the plus side, it would strengthen its existing resistance to Water, Grass, and Electric attacks. But, it would also introduce vulnerabilities to Dragon and Fairy types.

As a devoted Pokémon enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder the potential of an alternate evolution for my beloved Meganium – one that incorporates both Grass and Fairy typings. This dual-typing would offer Meganium an unparalleled balance, strengthening its defensive prowess while enhancing its offensive capabilities. The Fairy type, renowned as one of the most effective in Pokémon to date, would undoubtedly bolster Meganium’s overall performance and versatility on the battlefield.

By acquiring a secondary Fairy type, Meganium gains immunity against Dragon-type attacks and becomes more resistant to Dark and Fighting types, while only becoming slightly weaker against Steel-type attacks. However, it will now take four times the normal amount of damage from Poison-type attacks instead of twice. Additionally, the secondary Fairy typing eliminates Meganium’s weakness to Bug-type attacks, making them deal neutral damage instead.

In an offensive sense, Fairy is a potent type, dealing more harm to Dark, Dragon, and Fighting types. Yet, Meganium may find it challenging to overcome Fire and Poison types since they are resistant to Fairy-type attacks.

Tepig

In Generation 5, Tepig is the character who ignites fire, and its ultimate transformation becomes Emboar, a type of Pokemon that specializes in Fire and Fighting. Emboar boasts impressive offensive abilities across both physical and special dimensions, as well as an expansive array of powerful attacking moves. Unlike Meganium, Emboar doesn’t require drastic changes. However, should Nintendo decide to alter Emboar’s type in a Mega Evolution or alternative form, one idea could be Fire/Ground. This thematically fits Emboar as a pig since it enjoys rolling around in the mud.

Transforming Emboar into a Secondary Ground type might not be beneficial, because it would quadruple its vulnerability to Water-type attacks while forfeiting its resistance to Grass attacks. On the bright side, it would gain immunity to Electric attacks. Regardless, Emboar seems well-balanced as is, and if given an alternate form, it may still maintain its Fire/Fighting typing.

Totodile

In the second generation of Pokémon, Totodile serves as the Water-type starter. Among the Johto trio, it’s known for its aggressive physical attacks, making it a preferred choice by many trainers. Its ultimate form, Feraligatr, is similar to Emboar in that it doesn’t require significant changes. Since Feraligatr is purely a Water-type Pokémon, there’s a chance it might acquire a secondary type.

The logical additional type for Feraligatr, considering its theme, could be Dark. This choice aligns with Totodile’s mischievous and playful personality. Moreover, Feraligatr already knows several Dark-type moves like Bite, Crunch, Fake Tears, Snarl, and Lash Out. Having a secondary Dark type would enhance the power of its Dark attacking moves by granting them the STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus).

Feraligatr and Meganium are both reptile-like creatures, so it makes sense that Feraligatr could also be classified as a Water/Dragon type. This is because Feraligatr already knows moves like Dragon Claw, Outrage, and Dragon Dance. If Meganium doesn’t have a Mega Evolution or alternate form that’s Grass/Dragon, it would fit for Feraligatr to be a Dragon type too, as it seems unlikely that Nintendo would assign the same Dragon type to two starting Pokémon.

In the last quarter of 2025, the highly anticipated game, Pokemon Legends Z-A, is scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch. This edition presents a fresh perspective on the classic Pokemon combat system, integrating real-time mechanics where the range of attack moves becomes crucial. Evading moving Pokemon can lead to missed attacks in this exciting new version!
