Meet the New Faces in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2: Who’s Joining the Apocalypse?

During its debut season, “The Last of Us” followed the adventure of characters Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), as they traversed a post-apocalyptic United States following a fungal outbreak that had wiped out much of the world’s population, turning infected individuals into mindless creatures known as clickers. Uniquely immune to the infection, Ellie was under Joel’s protection to be delivered to the Fireflies – a militant group dedicated to discovering a cure for the fungus and saving humanity. Over time, a deep, father-daughter relationship formed between Joel and Ellie; when he discovered that Ellie needed to sacrifice herself so her brain could be used for a cure, Joel became enraged. In a desperate attempt to save Ellie’s life, he killed most of the Fireflies, including the surgeon who was preparing to operate on an unconscious Ellie.

Upon waking up, Ellie learns from Joel that other individuals like her who are immune have been discovered, which means the Fireflies no longer required her for creating a cure. As they approach Jackson, Wyoming, where Joel’s brother Tommy resides, Ellie insists that Joel vow for his honesty. He complies, and it appears that she decides to trust him on this matter.

In “The Last of Us” Season 2, the story takes place five years after the events of Season 1, focusing on Joel and Ellie dealing with the consequences of Joel’s actions at the end of the previous season. The majority of the cast is fresh, and the plot has grown even more expansive than before. Here’s a brief introduction to the main characters for this season:

– Joel (Troy Baker) – A hardened survivor who made significant decisions in Season 1 that have led us here.
– Ellie (Ashley Johnson) – Joel’s young companion, struggling with her own identity and place in the world.
– Abby (Laura Bailey) – A strong and determined woman whose life becomes entwined with Joel and Ellie’s.
– Tommy (Jeffrey Pierce) – Joel’s brother, who plays a crucial role in their survival.
– Marlene (Merle Dandridge) – The powerful and enigmatic leader of the Fireflies.
– Lev (Ian Alexander) – A mysterious and resourceful young man who joins Ellie on her journey.

    Joel (Pedro Pascal)

Past work: “The Mandalorian,” “Gladiator II,” “The Wild Robot”

    Faction: Jackson Settlement

When we first encounter Joel, he plays an essential role in the Jackson community, overseeing the construction of new homes and repairs on existing properties. However, he’s also grappling with a deep-rooted estrangement from Ellie, which has led him to seek counsel from a local therapist.

    Ellie (Bella Ramsey)

Past work: “Catherine Called Birdy,” “Game of Thrones”

    Faction: Jackson Settlement

What is going on with the character when we first see her?

At nineteen years old, she’s spent five years in Jackson, a place she’d never known safety before. This change has brought its own set of difficulties for her. She’s been coexisting with Joel to some extent, experiencing adult life alongside him and dealing with the complexities of new relationships around them. This has led to some tension. Moreover, the lie Joel told at the end of Season 1 lingers, casting a shadow over Ellie. Although she claims to trust him, I sense there’s a part of her that doubts his story. This uncertainty continues to trouble her thoughts.

Have you played “The Last of Us Part II”?

I don’t play video games, as you may have noticed. Instead, I found myself engrossed in intricate details for an extended period in what seemed like an unrelated space. The game’s level of detail and artistic beauty is astounding, almost to the point where it feels overwhelming. To tackle it would require a significant investment of time. Fortunately, there are generous souls who play these games and share their experiences on platforms like YouTube. These walkthroughs have been incredibly helpful for me, just as they were during Season 1.

How long do you think you would survive if you were put into the world of this show?

    In simpler terms,

I believe I could last quite some time in challenging situations. For instance, when playing laser tag (though not the same as a fungal apocalypse), I manage to stay alive indefinitely. I usually find a corner with my back against the wall for safety, then keep an eye out for others before moving to another hiding spot. I consider myself quite resourceful. Additionally, I’ve learned jujitsu and fight training this season, which gives me confidence that I’ll be able to hold my own for a while – until things inevitably take a turn for the worse.

    Abby (Kaitlyn Dever)

Past Work: “Unbelievable,” “Booksmart,” “Apple Cider Vinegar”

    Faction: Abby’s Crew

What is going on with your character when we first see her?

In the initial episode, we encounter a significantly worn-down version of Abby. This portrayal feels rather intriguing, in my opinion, since it offers a unique perspective on Abby that’s quite different from what players might expect. She’s been through immense grief and is struggling to find ways to deal with her loss. Simultaneously, we witness her navigating her new relationship with the Fireflies as she tries to piece herself back together.

What’s your favorite part of “The Last of Us Part II” game?

In the video game, you’ll find a button on the controller’s face, likely labeled R1. This button allows you to peer through walls, revealing any clickers hiding on the other side. I found this feature enjoyable as it helped me understand the clicker’s locations. The storyline in the initial game is exceptionally captivating and unique, standing out even among other games. Although I haven’t played many games, my father has, and he often remarks that there’s no game quite like this one. Consequently, I have a great deal of confidence in his opinion. Playing it together with him was a memorable experience.

How long do you think you would survive if you were put into the world of this show?

Ooh, to put a timeline on that is hard. I think I could go a long time.

    Dina (Isabela Merced)

Past work: “Alien: Romulus,” “Madame Web,” “Dora and the Lost City of Gold”

    Faction: Jackson Settlement

What is going on with your character when we first meet her?

It seems Dina is fully enjoying each moment, having a great time, perhaps recognizing that she’s been setting aside her responsibilities once more, leaving Jesse behind. There might be a realization that their relationship wasn’t destined to last, but it made sense at the time. Now, she’s immersed in this affectionate bond with Ellie and is trying to reconcile the relationship between Ellie and Joel since she’s cultivated a strong connection with Joel while getting closer to Ellie.

Did you get a chance to play “The Last of Us Part II”? If so, what aspects of the game were you most looking forward to seeing unfold in the storyline?

I looked forward to seeing more content beyond what the game already offered, as I knew there was plenty more. Learning that the music shop scene, a favorite from the original game, would be included made me incredibly enthusiastic.

How long do you think you would survive if you were put into the world of this show?

I’d rather not live. It seems it’s not my path. No, I appreciate the offer but I’ll pass. I’m content with my comfortable lifestyle at the moment.

    Tommy (Gabriel Luna)

Past work: “Fubar,” “Terminator: Dark Fate,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

    Faction: Jackson Settlement

What is going on with your character when we find him in season two?

Currently, our family consists of five members, and the bond I share with Joel has aided me in embracing Ellie more deeply. I believe that welcoming Benjamin into our lives has made it easier for Maria to accept Joel. Over time, various fragmented aspects of our family from the initial season have merged to form this cohesive unit, hiding our family secrets and things we conceal from one another. We find ourselves in a strong position at the outset, as we work together harmoniously without much friction.

Have you played “The Last of Us Part II?”

From the get-go, I played with the material prior to our launch of season one. This pre-existing familiarity has been instrumental in crafting a consistent narrative thread that’s persisted since then. When I first encountered the story through the source material, it felt complete to me, and now, it’s like an organic, effortless extension of that tale. It’s this seamlessness that I take great pride in when watching the premiere episode, as it avoids the need for a complete reboot to make the plot accessible.

How long do you think you would survive if you were put into the world of this show?

Once upon a time, I was considerably quicker than I am currently, but I’m quite skilled with my aim. Perhaps it’s been a while, but consider this: would a world devoid of gummy bears and Cheetos be a life worth living? I did engage in the game in its realistic setting, as I was fatally ambushed 10 minutes into the game, while carrying Sarah in my arms as I followed Tommy through it. Unfortunately, I became entangled on a fence, and within seconds, I was devoured. That marked the end of the game for me. So, it lasted just 10 minutes.

    Maria (Rutina Wesley)

Past work: “Queen Sugar,” “True Blood”

    Faction: Jackson Settlement

What is going on with your character when we find her in season two?

Initially, we find ourselves five years into the timeline, following the first season, and graced with our precious gift – our son Benji, whom we cherish deeply. He’s served as a bonding agent for me and Tommy, and Benji is a beacon of hope for Maria. Although she wasn’t previously in despair, having lost a son before, she harbored grief in the shadows and avoided discussing it. With Benji by her side, she has emerged from the darkness into the light once more, which is truly heartwarming. He’s softened her. Though she remains a general and governs with authority, her rule is now gentler.

Have you played “The Last of Us Part II?”

Instead of playing the game, I’ve been focusing on nurturing Maria individually and uncovering her true nature. However, lately, I find myself having a slight inclination towards giving the game a try.

How long do you think you would survive if you were put into the world of this show?

    I wouldn’t make it. I don’t think I’d make it too far.

    Jesse (Young Mazino)

    Past work: “Beef,” “Opus”

    Faction: Jackson Settlement

What is going on with your character when we first see him?

Jesse is a dedicated community member, constantly working tirelessly to ensure the well-being of his community. From the onset of the season, they’ve been receiving an increasing number of refugees seeking safety, which has led to a tremendous amount of work. Given Jesse’s significant role in the community, he’s making efforts to instill a strong sense of unity and resilience among its members.

“I’m curious, have you experienced ‘The Last of Us Part II?’ As a fan, there were several aspects I eagerly anticipated seeing unfold in the game. Could you share what particularly caught your attention?”

Absolutely! I found Jesse an intriguing character to portray because Stephen Chang, who originally played him in the game, had such a pleasant, relaxed demeanor that contrasts nicely with the more intense characters I’ve played recently. In my previous role on Netflix, I was playing an unstable character, so this was a refreshing change.

How long do you think you would survive if you were put into the world of this show?

I think I’ll be okay. Yeah, I’d be fine. I’d be all right.

    Gail (Catherine O’Hara)

Past work: “The Studio,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Schitt’s Creek”

    Faction: Jackson Settlement

When we initially encounter Gail, she’s a therapist based in the Jackson settlement, where Joel is among her clients. Previously, she was married to Eugene, another resident of Jackson, but regrettably, Eugene passed away about a year prior to the incidents detailed in Season 2.

    Manny (Danny Ramirez)

Past work: “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Black Mirror”

    Faction: Abby’s Crew

As I’m introduced, I’m a member of the Firefly crew that met a tragic end at the hands of Joel in season one. Now, I serve loyally under Abby, working towards our shared goal: tracking down Joel.

    Nora (Tati Gabrielle)

Past work: “You,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,”“Uncharted”

    Faction: Abby’s Crew

When we first encounter Nora, she is working as a medic in Abby’s search party, having been previously associated with the Fireflies group that Joel had destroyed at the end of Season 1.

    Mel (Ariela Barer)

Past work: “How To Blow Up a Pipeline,” “Marvel’s Runaways”

    Faction: Abby’s Crew

What is happening with the character when we first meet her?

Mel is one of the medics from the Fireflies group that Joel killed at the end of Season 1, but now she’s teamed up with Abby in her pursuit of Joel. Additionally, Mel is romantically involved with Owen, another member of the Fireflies.

    Owen (Spencer Lord)

Past work: “Riverdale,” “The Good Doctor”

    Faction: Abby’s Crew

How does Owen appear initially to us? In the opening of Season 1, Owen is among the Firefly troops who take part in the massacre where Joel is lost. However, by Season 2, we find him teaming up with his girlfriend Mel in their pursuit of Joel along with Abby.
