Ten years after it first came out, a popular Japanese visual novel for adults has reached a major milestone, solidifying its place as one of the most successful games of its kind.
Yuzusoft announced that their visual novel, SenrenBanka*, has sold over one million copies worldwide. First released in July 2016 to celebrate the studio’s 10th anniversary, the game reached this milestone thanks to its original adult PC version, as well as later, more restricted releases on Steam and Nintendo Switch.
I was happy to see character designer Muririn share a brand new illustration of Murasame! It was a way of saying thank you to all of us fans for our continued support, and it definitely brightened my day.
Senran*Banka Sells 1 Million Units Worldwide a Decade After Its Release
This is a major accomplishment, making SenrenBanka only the third visual novel to sell over a million copies as a single, standalone game – placing it among a very select few titles. While some series have reached this milestone with multiple games and related media, it’s unusual for a single moege visual novel to reach seven-figure sales.
This marks a first for Yuzusoft, as this game has become more successful than any of their previous popular titles, including Sabbat of the Witch and Café Stella and the Reaper’s Butterflies.
Reaching one million copies sold was a gradual process for the game. Sales initially picked up when a censored version was released on Steam. By late 2020, the game had sold 100,000 copies, and the release of the Nintendo Switch version boosted sales even further. It reached 400,000 copies in October 2023, then quickly added another 300,000 by September 2024, bringing the total to 700,000. Growth slowed after that, and it took another 18 months to reach the one million copy milestone in February 2026.
Senren*Banka Has Gained Positive Reviews on Steam & Other Platforms
This story, featuring moege, takes place in Hoori, a secluded mountain village that has become a popular tourist destination thanks to its charming, old-fashioned atmosphere. The main character, Masaomi Arichi, finds himself in trouble when he breaks the village’s famous, supposedly indestructible sword, Murasamemaru. To make amends, he’s forced to marry Yoshino Tomotake, the local shrine maiden and princess.
Masaomi’s life takes a strange turn when he becomes engaged and discovers he’s the only one who can see and interact with Murasame, a spirit tied to a shattered blade. Alongside Yoshino, her protector Mako, and a new student named Lena, he’s drawn into a centuries-old curse haunting the town of Hoori, all while navigating budding romantic feelings.
In this game, your decisions shape the story, influencing which character’s path you take and ultimately determining the ending you get. Since its release, SenrenBanka* has earned critical acclaim, including the 2016 Moe Game Award, and maintains a very positive reputation on Steam, with over 31,000 overwhelmingly positive reviews.
More than 29,000 reviews are written in Simplified Chinese, demonstrating the product’s strong popularity in East Asia, particularly outside of Japan. In contrast, there are currently fewer than 1,000 reviews in English.
