Mediawan Kids & Family to Turn Viral NFT Brand Claynosaurz Into Animated Series (EXCLUSIVE)

Mediawan Kids & Family, a division of the European media giant responsible for Plan B, See-Saw Films, and Chapter 2, has formed a partnership with Claynosaurz Inc., creators of the popular NFT brand. This collaboration will result in the creation of an animated series, drawing inspiration from the original digital franchise.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve been captivated by this incredible series, comprising of 39 seven-minute episodes. What makes it truly intriguing is the unique approach taken by Mediawan Kids & Family. Instead of relying on established industry names, they’ve chosen to collaborate with rising talents from the creator economy. This strategic move has led to the birth of innovative and original transmedia projects, offering a fresh perspective in the world of entertainment.

Designed for kids between 6 and 12 years old, this comedy series will trace the escapades of a group of four dinosaur pals on an enigmatic island. The talented Jesse Cleverly, who co-founded and creatively directs Mediawan’s Wildseed Studios based in Bristol and has received awards for their work, will oversee the project as the showrunner.

In 2021, Claynosaurz – a creation by Nicholas Cabana, Dan Cabral, and Daniel Jervis (former Sony Pictures VFX artists) – has amassed more than 450 million views and 200 million impressions across various digital platforms. It also boasts an online community of over 530,000 subscribers, thanks to its humorous short videos. This brand has been honored with 11 Collision Awards and a Webby Award.

Julien Borde, President of Mediawan Kids & Family, revealed to EbMaster that this upcoming series is expected to be unique, catering to a market need for content that already has an established audience engagement and data.

Borde noted that this is the first instance where a digital collectible brand has been extended into a TV series, making it a significant achievement for Mediawan Kids & Family as well as the entire industry. The project aligns with the company’s philosophy of fostering global talent, and Borde praised the Claynosaurz team for their passion for animation, innovative approach, and impressive past works. Moreover, this venture is part of Mediawan Kids & Family’s strategy to broaden their content offerings and establish a fresh lineup of top-tier content sourced from various platforms.

According to Cabana, he developed Claynosaurz in collaboration with a diverse team of artists from various studios such as Illumination, Dreamworks, Sony, Disney, and Ubisoft. By debuting through collectibles and NFTs, they were able to monetize their project during the early stages of development, allowing them to concentrate on character building instead of creating long-form content. Cabana explained that this approach allowed them to “turn the traditional model upside down” and “build the IP directly with fans,” as it enabled them to “embed the brand within the audience” at a time when it’s challenging for large studios to invest in emerging brands without proof of their viability or success.

Upon being approached by Mediawan, they swiftly grasped the distinctive tone, warmth, and offbeat humor inherent in Claynosaurz, and we both recognize the potential for remarkable franchises to spring from unconventional sources,” Cabana expressed. He emphasized that this style of community-led development is not only unique but essential.

The show intends to expand the digital brand’s reach by creating content that resonates strongly with viewers, while maintaining the funny and peculiar essence of the popular IP, Cabana mentioned. He further discussed their strategy of experimenting with creative concepts on social media platforms, viewing them as a test kitchen where they can gauge what audiences respond to and what doesn’t.

The program is set to debut on YouTube, with an option for conventional TV networks and streaming services to acquire it. According to Nicolas Fisch, who’s overseeing the series for Mediawan Kids & Family, the creative teams of Claynosaurz and Mediawan will collaborate in a shared writing space.

As a seasoned movie critic, I am thrilled to share that the upcoming animated series is being brought to life by none other than Katell France (“Vic the Viking”) from Method Animation, a renowned studio behind masterpieces like “The Little Prince.” This production powerhouse is collaborating with Cabana at Claynosaurz for the creation of this exciting new show, under the esteemed label of Mediawan. I can hardly wait to see what these talented teams have in store!

This year, I had the privilege of attending the illustrious Cannes Film Festival, where Mediawan showcased the enchanting animated film “Marcel et Monsieur Pagnol,” a masterpiece directed by the brilliant Sylvain Chomet, known for his work on “The Triplets of Belleville.
