Six years after “Avengers: Endgame,” I firmly believe that “Avengers: Cataclysm” won’t require the team seen in the previous movie, thanks to two new groups set to debut in 2025. The debate about what “Avengers: Cataclysm” should and shouldn’t include has been a hot topic ever since the film was announced. There have been questions about whether the movie needs Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, or if the cast list for “Avengers: Cataclysm” is too extensive to maintain a clear, captivating narrative. The film has certainly sparked much discussion.
As an MCU fan, it’s true that the anticipation and speculation about upcoming Marvel films is part of the excitement. Many people, including myself, enjoy discussing potential plotlines and character appearances, as long as it remains respectful and each movie or show is evaluated based on its own qualities once it premieres. Notably, Avengers: Doomsday is one of the most highly anticipated Marvel movies since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which has fueled even more speculation every day. Regarding the ongoing discussions about who might be cast in Avengers: Doomsday, I am convinced that for the first time since 2019, a team from The Avengers’ past may not be necessary.
Avengers: Doomsday Does Not Need The Guardians Of The Galaxy Thanks To The New Avengers & The Fantastic Four
The 2025 Teams Will Fill In For The Guardians
The group I refer to is known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. In the movies “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”, they were crucial allies to the main Avengers team, offering unique contrasts to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Unlike the Avengers who often work together more like colleagues, the Guardians are a chosen family, a dynamic that was recently emphasized in “Thunderbolts” through Bob/Sentry’s narrative. Additionally, the Guardians are space-faring characters with extensive knowledge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond Earth, something the Avengers lack except for Thor.
In “Avengers: Doomsday,” it is revealed that both teams, The New Avengers and The Fantastic Four, will take on these roles. These teams share a dynamic similar to a family, which has been further strengthened by the events of The Thunderbolts. This bond, forged through shared hardship, underscores their friendship beyond ordinary levels. Over the years, The Fantastic Four have been known as Marvel’s First Family due to their deep connections. Additionally, The Fantastic Four will incorporate elements of space exploration similar to the Guardians, filling the void left by their absence in that regard.
No Guardians Of The Galaxy Members Have Been Confirmed For Avengers: Doomsday As Of Yet
The Team Is Nowhere To Be Seen
Regarding why the Guardians might require heroes to replace them, it appears that none of the Avengers were present in the cast reveal for “Avengers: Doomsday”. The live-stream announcement showcased several familiar Avengers, newcomers from Thunderbolts, The Fantastic Four, and heroes from the X-Men film series by Fox. This suggests that the Guardians will not be involved in the battle against Doom.
Although Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ president, has suggested that additional cast members might be revealed, it’s worth noting that the Guardians of the Galaxy haven’t been included yet in the movie. This is likely why we see characters from The New Avengers and The Fantastic Four taking center stage instead. While these teams add unique aspects to the plot, their familial bonds and space-faring characteristics echo some of what the Guardians bring to the table. This might help reduce the potential letdown that the Guardians, for now, appear not to be part of the story.
Why It Makes Sense To Leave The Guardians Of The Galaxy Absent From Avengers: Doomsday
Avengers: Doomsday Should Not Be Too Overstuffed
Although it may be disheartening for fans that the Guardians might miss out on Avengers: Doomsday, their absence seems logical. Following the conclusion of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the team as we knew them from the Infinity Saga has disbanded. Characters like Star-Lord, Gamora, Nebula, Drax, and Mantis have embarked on new journeys, while Rocket and Groot are busy forming a new squad. Given this, having many of the original Guardians show up could somewhat tarnish their respective Marvel Cinematic Universe conclusions.
Concerning the fresh Guardians squad, it might be wiser to exclude them from Avengers: Doomsday because having too many characters could make the movie feel overwhelming. Instead, the 2025 Marvel films that have been planned for a while, such as Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, seem more suitable as precursors to the 2026 Avengers movie. By doing this, Avengers: Doomsday would feature teams of heroes that audiences are already acquainted with, while the new Guardians are yet to star in their own film. Therefore, it’s plausible that Marvel might not require the Guardians in Avengers: Doomsday, even though they were considered essential six years ago.
