McDonald’s finally getting new drinks after closing CosMc’s test stores

Starting from September 2nd, McDonald’s will be introducing a fresh assortment of refreshing and tasty beverages across more than 500 restaurants, after concluding the closure of its CosMc’s subsidiary.

The fast-food company is conducting taste tests for their drinks in restaurants situated in Wisconsin, Colorado, and surrounding areas, as part of a larger plan concerning their beverage offerings.

This assortment features drinks such as the Toasted Vanilla Shake, Strawberry-Watermelon Slushie, Sprite Starlight Beverage, Bubbly Tropical Slushie, and Smooth Vanilla Iced Coffee.

Two months ago, this decision was made, following McDonald’s announcement that they would shut down all CosMc’s outlets. Instead, they plan to offer their top-selling beverages at their primary restaurants.

McDonald’s leans into drinks to boost Gen Z appeal

According to McDonald’s Chief Customer Experience and Marketing Officer, Alyssa Buetikofer, there is a noticeable surge in the popularity of beverages. Particularly our Gen Z followers are preferring cold, tasty drinks as their preferred choice for a treat.

globally popular TikTok users experiment with the internet sensation known as ‘Dirty Soda’, which consists of blending various beverages such as a Fairlife protein shake combined with Diet Coke.

McDonald’s explains that the drink test aims to improve their operational efficiency and menu selections, potentially making it available across all U.S. locations in the future.

Charlie Newberger, McDonald’s Beverage Category Lead, stated, “We’re not just expanding our drink options, but rather enhancing our global beverage system.” In other words, we have the necessary infrastructure, resources, and personnel to swiftly implement successful ideas on a larger scale.

Over the past year, McDonald’s has been expanding its menu offerings. For instance, they introduced the McCrispy Strips in May 2025, which brought back the popular Snack Wraps on July 10, a move that many customers had been eagerly anticipating.
