Max to Debut in Japan Within U-Next Platform

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say this news about Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming service expansion into Japan is nothing short of exhilarating! Having traversed various continents and cultures in search of cinematic gems, I can confidently assert that the Japanese market’s rich storytelling tradition will undoubtedly enrich the Max platform.

Starting from the coming week, Warner Bros. Discovery’s upgraded streaming platform, Max, will make its debut in the Asia-Pacific region through a collaboration with U-Next, a popular Japanese streaming service.

In regions like Europe where it’s already been introduced, Max stands out by providing a broader range of content to viewers compared to its predecessor HBO, and also offers advanced technology. Yet, the Max app, boasting additional features, has not been released for the Japanese market as of now.

Starting the week after next, Max will be accessible as a unique, self-branded platform within the Japanese streaming service. This new environment boasts its own user interface and houses over 16,000 episodes across more than 2,500 titles from WarnerMedia’s entertainment brands such as HBO, Harry Potter, DC Comics, Warner Bros., Cartoon Network, Discovery Channel, and Animal Planet.

In addition to their agreement, the two parties will allow WBD to obtain Japanese content simultaneously with U-Next. This content will then be distributed worldwide on Max.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that our partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery (previously Warner Media) has grown even more extensive. Originally signed in March 2021 and recently renewed in 2023, this distribution agreement has been expanded, offering me an even wider range of films to enjoy!

Japan stands out as one of the most significant streaming markets within its region, and U-Next, the fastest growing domestic Over-The-Top (OTT) platform in Japan, is a highly competitive local player that has a deep understanding of this market. The collaboration with U-Next through Max will help us reach Japanese consumers more swiftly and efficiently while providing a platform for homegrown stories to be shared with international audiences, according to James Gibbons, WBD president for APAC. We are excited to expand Max throughout the Asia Pacific region using various strategies tailored to each local market.

Tsutsumi Tenshin, CEO of U-Next, expressed excitement about our new, exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Discovery for launching Max on U-Next. This partnership represents a significant chance for us to broaden the global audience for top-tier Japanese intellectual properties through the Max platform.

On Max through U-Next, you’ll find programming that includes HBO originals and exclusive Max series. These shows will be released simultaneously with their U.S. debuts, such as fresh episodes of “The Penguin”, “Dune: Prophecy”, and new installments of “The Last of Us”, “House of the Dragon” and “The White Lotus”.

In Japan, Harry Potter series has gained immense popularity. Soon, fans in Japan will have unrestricted access to stream all Harry Potter movies in ultra-high definition (4K) and high dynamic range (HDR) quality. More 4K/HDR content is set to be released as well.

These upcoming movies from Hollywood and Max Originals, like “Salem’s Lot” and “Juror No. 2”, will make their debut exclusively. In addition, beloved series from Warner Bros. Television such as “The Big Bang Theory” and “Friends” will be accessible, along with an increased variety of high-quality factual entertainment and kids shows, including “Deadliest Catch,” “Gold Rush,” and “Tom and Jerry.
