Max level in The Outer Worlds 2 and the limit of perks and skills. This is how the restrictions in the game look like

Unlike some RPGs, The Outer Worlds 2 doesn’t let you level up your character forever. There are limits to how much experience, skills, and perks you can earn. This page details those limits and explains if you can reset your character’s abilities.

Level cap

You improve your character by earning experience points, just like in many other games. However, there are limits to how much you can grow. In the standard version of the game, the maximum level is 30. Once you reach level 30, you’ll no longer be able to earn skill points or unlock new abilities.

Your teammates grow stronger alongside you, always keeping pace with your level. Every five levels, you get to pick special perks for them, which can boost things like their special attack power. Don’t worry about recruiting them quickly – you won’t miss out on any abilities they had at earlier levels.

Okay, so you can’t just give weapons or armor to my companions directly, which is a bit annoying. But the cool thing is, as they level up and do their personal quests, they get these modification kits. Then I can head to any workbench and actually customize what they’re wearing and using – so it’s not a total loss, I just can’t hand them stuff directly.

Max skill level and perks limit

As you gain levels, there are two key restrictions. You earn one skill point with each new level, but skill development is capped at level 20 – lower than your character’s overall level.

Okay, so from what I’ve learned, it’s way better to really focus on just 2 or 3 skills and get them up to around 10-20 points. That’s where you unlock the really powerful stuff! Like, you can do the most advanced actions with those skills, or get huge boosts to your stats – think bigger attack power and stuff. For example, I’ve been leveling up Lockpick and Speech, and now I can open almost any lock and talk my way out of (or into) pretty much any situation. It’s awesome because I can avoid fights or finish quests way easier!

Getting new perks is restricted. You only earn one perk every two levels, meaning you’ll unlock a total of 15 perks throughout the game. Also, certain items and abilities become available only when your skills are high enough – for example, you might need 8 points in Lockpicking to access something.

Be sure to read the details for each perk. Some perks let you do things you couldn’t before, like pickpocketing. Others simply boost your stats, like making attacks with a certain weapon 10% more powerful.

Is it possible to reset character development (respec)?

Having lots of skills and options should let you try out different character builds and playstyles. However, the game doesn’t make it easy to change things up because you generally can’t reset your skills. Many other RPGs let you ‘respec’ your character, but this game doesn’t usually allow that. There’s one exception: after finishing the prologue, a character named Valerie will offer a skill reset, letting you redistribute the points you’ve already spent.

Once you’ve progressed past a certain point, you won’t be able to reset your character’s progress, even if you’re willing to pay for it. There are no options in the game to do so. Therefore, it’s important to think carefully before spending development points, as these choices are permanent and you won’t be able to learn every skill or perk.
