Matthew Lillard Says ‘FNAF’ Fans Rival ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Harry Potter’

Five Nights at Freddy’s has become incredibly popular, and its success shows no signs of stopping. It started as a scary game created by Scott Cawthon, where players tried to survive the night while avoiding creepy animatronic characters at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Now, the franchise includes movies, books, and comics, with a surprisingly detailed backstory. Despite dealing with some unsettling themes, FNAF has attracted a huge and diverse fanbase, appealing to both kids and adults.

With the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 approaching, Matthew Lillard, known for his role as the villain William Afton in the first FNAF movie, spoke with MovieWeb about the passionate fanbase and the growing story of the Five Nights at Freddy’s series. It’s been over two years since the first film debuted.

The core idea, and it’s pretty shocking, is that my character has killed five children and hidden their bodies inside the animatronic robots. It’s a concept that’s really resonated with fans. When you think about dedicated fan bases – like those for Star Trek, Star Wars, or Harry Potter – the Five Nights at Freddy’s community is just as passionate and large, if not more so.

The depth and authenticity of the story and its surrounding details are incredible. The developers have built such a rich world, and the fan community is incredibly engaged and connected – I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Playing such an iconic character like William Afton was definitely challenging, but ultimately very satisfying. I’ve been really pleased with how people have responded to my performance, and I hope they feel the same way about the next movie.

Matthew Lillard Reunites With ‘Scream’ Star in ‘FNAF 2’

Okay, so as a horror fan, I was pretty excited to hear this news! Skeet Ulrich, who played Billy Loomis in Scream, is showing up in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2! While details are scarce, most people are guessing he’ll be playing Henry Emily, William Afton’s old business partner and one of the founders of the company behind Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. It’s a fun little connection for fans of both franchises, and I’m definitely curious to see how they use him.

At Silver Scream Con 2025, Billy Lillard expressed his excitement about working with John Ulrich again, suggesting they might collaborate on future projects.

I watched his performance this week, and I think audiences are really going to enjoy it. He’s playing a fantastic character, and I hope he returns for future installments if the movie does well. The Five Nights at Freddy’s fanbase is so enthusiastic, and it’s wonderful to have him involved. I’m really happy Scott Cawthon cast him.

Ulrich enthusiastically shared that he always enjoys being around Lillard, describing him as one of the kindest and most admirable people he knows.

He’s a very generous person, as many of you know,” he said. “I always enjoy being around him, and working on Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 was no different.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 hits theaters on Dec. 5.
