Matt Reeves Shares His Vision For The Batman's Epic Crime Saga

As a seasoned gamer and die-hard Batman fan, I must say that the announcement of HBO Max’s The Penguin spin-off has sent my excitement levels soaring! With my fingers crossed and eyes glued to the screen, I eagerly await the series, hoping it will be as captivating as Matt Reeves’ vision for The Batman Epic Crime Saga.

This week, HBO Max and HBO debuted “The Penguin,” the initial spin-off series stemming from “The Batman.” Although this series is part of director Matt Reeves’ vision for what he terms “The Batman Epic Crime Saga,” it was never intended to be the sole series emerging from the first movie. However, plans for separate shows focusing on Gotham City Police Department and Arkham Asylum were scrapped. If “The Penguin” proves successful, Reeves hints at more spin-offs in the future.

When conversing with EW, Reeves chose not to disclose which spin-offs he’s thinking about aside from The Penguin. However, he hinted that potential future series could stem from concepts proposed for the past GCPD and Arkham Asylum proposals.

According to Reeves, the topics we’re discussing now are advanced iterations of their predecessors, or spin-offs, if you will. It wasn’t that they failed; instead, it was about refining them, making them better. I’d say it’s less about something that didn’t pan out and more about a continuous journey towards reaching its ultimate goal.

Initially, director Matt Reeves contemplated incorporating Robert Pattinson as Batman into the upcoming film The Penguin, but ultimately decided against it. However, he subtly suggested that Pattinson might appear as Batman in a different project in the future.

Reeves mentioned that it’s not ruled out for Batman, or even Bruce Wayne, to make an appearance on the future series, but it’s more of a possibility rather than a definite plan. In our discussions with Lauren LeFranc about the show, we considered whether we could somehow involve Rob in the series, but this idea came up later.

At the moment, Reeves has shared some exciting updates. He’s completed the script for The Batman 2 and intends to start filming the sequel next year. Moreover, he mentioned that the sequel will advance in time after the occurrences of The Penguin. Interestingly, Oz will serve as one of the entry points into the movie. He didn’t reveal much about what happens afterward, but he did express enthusiasm for where the story is heading.

The Batman Part 2 will hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
