A popular, highly-praised thriller starring Matt Damon is now available to watch for free on a new streaming service. The film was so well-received, it even inspired a successful remake series.
Good news for movie fans! You’ll be able to watch The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring Matt Damon, on Tubi for free in just a few days. It arrives on the streaming service December 1st, along with other popular films like The Meg and I, Robot.
Directed by Anthony Minghella and adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel, the story follows a man who unexpectedly meets a rich businessman. He’s hired to convince Dickie Greenleaf, an old college friend, to return home. However, instead of doing his job, he quickly becomes absorbed into Dickie’s relaxed and unsettling way of life.
Throughout the movie, Tom doesn’t just keep pretending to be other people—he starts killing to protect himself and achieve his goals. He eventually murders a friend and then begins impersonating him from a distance, creating a complicated network of lies that leads to even more chaos and violence.
Starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, The Talented Mr. Ripley was a critical and commercial success. Critics loved the film, and it currently holds an 85% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 139 reviews. It also performed well financially, earning almost $130 million despite having a production budget of only $40 million.
The Talented Mr. Ripley Received Multiple Adaptations
Although Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley is a beloved film, it’s just one of several adaptations of Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley novels, and not even the newest. In 2002, John Malkovich played Ripley in Liliana Cavani’s Ripley’s Game, a critically acclaimed film that didn’t perform well in theaters. Then, in 2005, Barry Pepper took on the role in Roger Spottiswoode’s Ripley Under Ground, but it didn’t gain much attention.
Andrew Scott recently starred as Tom Ripley in the series Ripley, which received positive feedback from both critics and audiences—earning an 86% approval rating from critics and 82% from viewers. Since its release, there’s been no announcement about a second season, leaving fans hoping to see where the story goes next.
The Talented Mr. Ripley will be available for streaming on Tubi beginning Dec. 1.
