Matt Damon ‘Can’t Imagine Living Under’ the Same Press Scrutiny as Ben Affleck: ‘We’ve Had Parallel Careers’ but ‘I’m Fortunate’ to Be Excused From That

As a movie enthusiast with decades of watching and analyzing films under my belt, I find it fascinating to delve into the lives and careers of some of Hollywood’s most iconic figures. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are undoubtedly among those who have captivated audiences for years, their friendship and collaborations serving as a testament to the power of perseverance in Tinseltown.

Matt Damon expressed on the “Radio Times Podcast” (as reported by People) that he finds it hard to envision the constant media attention that his friend and frequent co-star Ben Affleck has experienced throughout their careers. Damon pointed out that their paths have mirrored each other in many aspects, both rising to fame together with their Academy Award-winning film “Good Will Hunting,” followed by leading roles in blockbuster franchises and big-budget studio productions.

“Damon stated, ‘I’ve been quite fortunate in this aspect, particularly when I compare it to Casey’s brother, Ben. The thought of enduring such intense scrutiny for 25 years is beyond me. Our careers have run parallel in many ways, and it’s been a blessing to be spared from that aspect of it.'”

Although both men’s professional paths were quite alike, their private lives showed stark differences. Damon attributes his low-key personal life, largely due to his “unexciting” marriage (to Luciana Barroso), as a significant factor that has kept the media scrutiny at bay compared to Affleck, whose ongoing relationship with Jennifer Lopez remains a hot topic for tabloids.

“Two and a half decades ago, magazine culture was all the rage, but it largely overlooked me,” Damon remarked. “You know, much like a married man, it found marital bliss rather dull. They were more interested in sensationalism and scandal – anything but matrimony. So, since I didn’t engage in such activities, they deemed me unworthy of their attention. Consequently, my image was rarely captured.”

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but share my personal experience: Fame, an unusual, bewildering sensation, enveloped me like a veil. Intrigued by the allure of cinema, I yearned to dive deep into work, so I secluded myself for some years, finding solace while I navigated the labyrinth of stardom. Fortunately, I found love in someone who wasn’t part of this industry and was understanding enough to let me grapple with my new reality. This support proved instrumental in helping me find my footing.

Throughout their careers, these two performers have supported each other through fame and diverse professional challenges. For example, Affleck disclosed to Entertainment Weekly in 2022 that Damon played a pivotal part in helping him redefine his career after the difficult phase he faced while working on “Justice League.”

Affleck shared with Damon for EW that his experience around ‘Justice League’ was a particularly difficult one due to multiple factors. He’s not pointing fingers, but there were numerous issues. Essentially, he wasn’t content, found the environment unappealing, and felt the project lacked appeal. Then, some truly terrible incidents occurred. At that point, he decided he no longer wanted to participate in such projects.

Affleck went on to say, “I discussed the matter with you and your perspective played a significant role in our choice. I’m aiming to engage in activities that bring me happiness. Afterward, we worked on ‘The Last Duel,’ where I enjoyed every day on set. I wasn’t the lead, I wasn’t likeable. Instead, I portrayed a villain. I wasn’t what I thought I was supposed to be at the start of my career, but it was still an amazing journey. And these unexpected opportunities didn’t come knocking because I was pursuing them.”

Affleck and Damon recently collaborated in the 2021 movie “Air” and are working on several upcoming films together. One of these projects is a Netflix thriller called “RIP,” penned by Joe Carnahan, and another is a movie that explores Hulk Hogan’s famous legal dispute with Gawker. Gus Van Sant will helm this latter project, bringing them back together with their director from “Good Will Hunting.”
