Caution: Revealing plot points from Matlock’s Season 1, Episodes 18 (Parts One and Two) titled “Tricks of the Trade”. Proceed with caution if you don’t want these details to be spoiled for you.
In the realm of television, a season finale often sets up suspenseful moments known as cliffhangers. With Matlock’s final arguments for Season 1 now scheduled for 2025, I can assure you that the “Tricks of the Trade” two-hour event left us dangling with multiple plot twists to keep us guessing until the start of Season 2.
Surprisingly enough, unveiling the Welbrexa offender wasn’t the main event we should focus on. So, let’s grab some dinner and get ready to dive in! We’re about to sift through the secret files, scrutinize what the next season of Matlock has in store for us, and uncover any hidden truths it may hold.
Julian Did Indeed Steal The Missing Welbrexa File
Occasionally, it’s frustrating to be proven correct, as my suspicion about Julian Markston being the thief in the Welbrexa study case following Jason Ritter’s TikTok dance has sadly come true. Regarding the opportunity aspect, it seems plausible that the 25th floor fire drill was orchestrated by Senior (Beau Bridges), and his subsequent Australia trip may have been a convenient consequence of this study’s existence.
It turns out that he is indeed the true villain behind Welbrexa, using Julian as a pawn. This revelation leaves me uncertain about his motives. As a young man, attempting to win his father’s approval, he leaked information about the file, knowledge he obtained through his connection with Shae (Yael Grobglas), who was involved with Matlock. His father then ordered the action, and his son willingly executed it as a means to gain his father’s favor.

Olympia Made Partner, And Hasn’t Rejected Julian’s Pleads For Mercy
It’s clear that Julian didn’t win the partner race, and based on how “Tricks of the Trade” ended with him and his ex-wife Olympia Lawrence, it seems his departure might not be instantaneous. Instead, you may need to search for him in older episodes, which can be found through a Paramount+ subscription. Interestingly, the financial records, despite being suspect, weren’t the definitive evidence that was hoped for, thanks to Madeline Matlock’s tenuous partnership with Olympia.

Paramount Plus: Starting from $7.99 per month or $79.99 annually
Choose to pay as low as $7.99 monthly, or upgrade to the ad-free Premium plan with Showtime for $12.99 a month. Don’t forget that Paramount+ is the place to be! While you might know it by other names such as Matlock, Kathy Bates, or Andy Griffith, this popular legal franchise is readily available for your streaming pleasure whenever you desire. Take advantage of this deal now.
Instead, it was discovered that she had access to a secret deposit box, inside of which lay the missing Welbrexa file – a piece of evidence potentially incriminating the Markstons. Jacobson Moore’s partner now finds herself at a crossroads: loyalty to her job and family, or pursuing justice. The resolution remains uncertain, as our final scene depicts Ms. Lawrence holding the Welbrexa study tightly, her decision yet unspoken.

Billy Is About To Become A Father
It seems like Billy (David Del Rio) is about to embark on a fresh chapter with Claudia (Bella Ortiz), as the finale of “Matlock” revealed her return. Previously, at the office Christmas party, she turned down a proposal. However, it’s now apparent that they have been getting close romantically, coinciding with Billy’s time spent with Simone (Andrea Londo).
As “Hot Billy Summer” was on the brink of starting, Claudia unexpectedly appeared at the office with some news. Unsurprisingly, Sarah (Leah Lewis) isn’t thrilled about this, and Simone is oblivious to the trouble brewing ahead. This could potentially add another layer of complexity to a plotline that was still hanging in the balance for Matlock.

Sarah Has Won Her First Case, And Simone Is Gunning For Her
Last week’s Matlock marathon began with Sarah composing a straightforward cease-and-desist letter for one of Olympia’s clients, which later led to allegations of attempted murder. The main focus of this week’s two-part episode centered around the gym owner that Sarah wrote the letter for, as he was accused of murdering his business partner in order to seize control.
Following my heated confrontation with Olympia, I’ve managed to secure my initial legal victory – a significant milestone for me. This success has sparked a thought: I believe that Season 2 of Matlock might introduce Andrea Londo’s antagonistic counterpart as a recurring character within the halls of Jacobson Moore.
In “Tricks of the Trade,” Simone not only revealed her plan to implicate Sarah, but also grew closer to the cleared gym owner following her breakup with Billy. It appears two paths of retribution are primed for ignition, potentially signaling that “Hot Billy Summer” is undoubtedly over.

Alfie Got In Touch With The Man Who Could Be His Birth Father
In my final arguments, I reserved the most important point until the end, much like a skilled lawyer would. A loose thread from Season 1’s finale that was never quite resolved was the paternity mystery involving Alfie (Aaron Harris), which bore striking resemblances to a Matlock-style case. The matter between Madeline and her husband, Edwin Kingston (Sam Anderson), had escalated into an argument, but it seemed they chose not to delve deeper into it.
Alfie, the energetic young fellow, managed to reach out and kept it a secret from everyone until the reality surfaced at the Kingston household. Upon opening the door, Madeline found herself face-to-face with an individual who bore a striking resemblance to Milo Ventimiglia or a blend of the “This is Us” actor with Ryan Gosling, making his objectives quite clear. He aimed to connect with his family, thus concluding “Matlock” Season 1 with Matty extending an invitation for this man to join their home.

For a short while, it seemed as if the Welbrexa enigma might finally be resolved, with certain individuals from the Kingston family considering a return to San Francisco. Simultaneously, Madeline Matlock, who has gone by that name since the initiation of her Jacobson Moore undercover operation, is growing weary of staying in the background.
She’s developed an appetite for returning to the legal field, and while securing justice for her daughter’s untimely demise would be a significant milestone, she remains committed to assisting others. The resolution of those personal matters is just as uncertain as the future actions of Olympia Lawrence in this precarious situation.
If Season 2 of “Matlock” hadn’t been renewed early, it’s intriguing to speculate if a different finale would have played out, effectively ending the series forever. However, with an entire summer ahead, we can only imagine what’s coming next. As for when we’ll revisit the law firm of Jacobson Moore, we don’t know yet. So, this isn’t a goodbye to Matty Matlock and her antics, but more like a “see you again later.
