Warning: SPOILERS for the Matlock season 1 finale, “Tricks of the Trade.”
Although the first season of Matlock wraps up the Wellbrexa case neatly, it sets the stage for an even more intriguing second year. The ending of Matlock’s first season didn’t hold back on suspenseful cliffhangers. There’s a baby on the way, the introduction of a father for a teen who hasn’t met him before, and an unforeseen promotion. Yet, despite resolving many questions from season 1, some aspects related to the Wellbrexa file remain unresolved. Contrary to expectations, these lingering mysteries persist.
In the climax of season 1 finale of Matlock, it appeared as though the identity of the one concealing the Wellbrexa file would be unmasked. Regrettably, what was truly exposed was that Olympia is still shielding the real perpetrator from her closest friend Matty. She has her motives for doing so, and these motives are likely to keep influencing the characters in Matlock as the story unfolds. For now, Matty must carry on her investigation without being aware that her best friend holds all the solutions. This revelation is bound to have a significant impact on the second season of the series.
Matlock Season 1 Finale Ends With The Confirmation That Julian Hid The Wellbrexa File
He Knew That He Wasn’t Doing The Next Right Thing
Maybe the favorable ratings for “Matlock” should have hinted at some thrilling surprises towards the end, but Julian’s concealment of the Wellbrexa file was one of the most astonishing twists for unanticipated reasons. Matty had already discovered evidence that nobody else could have carried out, but what truly came as a shock was learning that Julian had been keeping the Wellbrexa study in a safety deposit box all along. Olympia made this discovery while investigating the trust that Matty had long suspected would be linked to Wellbrexa.
An intriguing aspect of this disclosure is that Julian, despite being a truly capable attorney, had taken the file unlawfully initially, solely to gain approval from his father. However, he’s come to terms with the fact that such approval will never materialize. Consequently, he’s decided to depart from Jacobson Moore and embark on his own career path. This move positions him as a direct collaborator, but it also makes him an ideal scapegoat. The firm can now pin the cover-up on him, should it become necessary, without directly incriminating themselves with only circumstantial evidence.
Madeline’s Revenge Plan Will Be Far More Complicated In Matlock Season 2
The Coverup Isn’t Just About Julian Anymore
Following Alfie’s father’s arrival in Matlock, it’s tough to imagine her solely invested in her revenge scheme anymore. Now, she must also be concerned about her grandson’s emotional well-being. Moreover, the return of Alfie’s father implies that Matty will grapple with memories of Ellie for most of Matlock season 2. Given this, it’s likely she’ll seek a paternity test to clarify matters. However, regardless of the outcome, the results could only lead to more uncertainties.
It’s crucial to note that Julian concealed things due to his deep desire for Senior’s acceptance. However, after Olympia’s promotion, he realized this approval would never come. Consequently, he chose to let go of it. Nevertheless, Olympia might choose to protect Julian by not revealing her discovery of the Wellbrexa document. This means that Matty will continue her search for clues without all the necessary information. This could significantly slow down her progress, and it may strain their friendship when she eventually learns the truth.
Matlock Season 2 Is Poised To Surpass Season 1’s Quality
The Show Can Only Keep Getting Better With Time
With the tension between me and Jacobson Moore reaching new heights in our relationship, I can’t wait to see where it goes next season of Matlock. The news that Jason Ritter will be back is thrilling because it seems more likely than ever that Matty and Julian will finally face off. I’ve known Senior for a while, even sharing a few joints with him, so I won’t be too shocked if he fills me in on how Julian has been treated. Although I have no reason to forgive what Julian did, I might find myself understanding his motives.
In the upcoming season, there are numerous other storylines to delve into, now that we’ve discovered the individual behind the Reddit post which initially led Matty and Edwin towards Jacobson Moore. With this revelation, there are countless queries about what else she might know, adding mystery and intrigue to the plot of Matlock. The second season would likely reveal more details about this narrative thread. Given that Matty seems to be facing a challenging situation, the next year promises to provide engaging entertainment as we watch him navigate these obstacles.
