A resident of Massachusetts has astonishingly bagged $1 million not once, but twice, in a single Powerball draw, due to his oversight of having already purchased a ticket earlier.
According to People’s initial report and subsequent confirmation by Powerball, Paul Corcoran from Fitchburg won two $1 million prizes in the July 9, 2025 Powerball draw. This is because both of his tickets had the identical winning white ball numbers: 5, 9, 25, 28, and 69.
Initially, Corcoran bought a multi-draw lottery ticket good for seven straight draws, which included July 9. Assuming that drawing had already occurred, he inadvertently purchased another identical ticket for the same draw as well. However, it was this unintentional error that ultimately resulted in a double win and a life-changing event.
Massachusetts man wins $1 million twice in one night
At the Lottery’s office in Dorchester on July 11, Corcoran collected both of his winnings. He shared with the Massachusetts Lottery that these victories made him feel great, and at this point, he hasn’t decided what to do with the earnings yet.
In the July 9th drawing, eight people nationwide won $1 million each for matching five white balls (the “Match 5” prize), and remarkably, Corcoran held two of these winning tickets. According to Powerball statistics, the chance of matching five white balls to win a $1 million prize is approximately 1 in 11.7 million. This makes it extremely unusual for someone to win twice in the same draw with two different tickets.

Powerball entry prices are set at $2 for each attempt, and these tickets can be purchased in 45 American states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands.
