Mass Layoffs Hit Mortal Kombat Developer NetherRealm

As a long-time gamer and follower of the gaming industry, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the recent news that NetherRealm’s mobile team has been laid off. The impact of this decision will undoubtedly be felt not just within the company, but also by the gaming community.

NetherRealm, the company behind Mortal Kombat, has let go of its mobile division. The exact number of employees who lost their jobs is undisclosed, but reports suggest it’s over 50 people.

Several ex-employees of NetherRealm have shared on LinkedIn that they were let go from the company. More recently, in 2023, I discovered Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, another free mobile offering. However, this one is quite different from its predecessors – it’s a multiplayer online battle arena game, which means I engage in real-time battles with other players, creating a unique and dynamic gaming experience that sets it apart from the traditional Mortal Kombat fighting games.
