Jack Wall, who composed the music for both Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, was not involved with Mass Effect 3 or any projects by developer BioWare after that. The reason isn’t entirely clear, but in an interview, Wall mentioned that there seemed to be tension between him and Casey Hudson, the director of Mass Effect, towards the end.
Although the game didn’t meet the expectations of its creator, Wall expressed great pride in the score from that particular game to The Guardian. Notably, this music was nominated for a BAFTA award. The Mass Effect 3 soundtrack was composed by a team consisting of Sascha Dikiciyan, Sam Hulick, Christopher Lennertz, Cris Velasco, and Clint Mansell.
Regarding the apparent tension with Hudson, Wall acknowledged, “Situations like these occasionally occur; they’re just par for the course.” Such challenging experiences at work are not common for Wall, however. He reflected, “It’s been unusual in my career, but that was a difficult period. Still, it is what it is.
Speaking about Hudson, he parted ways with BioWare following the underwhelming debut of Anthem. Earlier, he initiated a new studio to create an original intellectual property, but unfortunately, the project was scrapped, leading to the closure of the studio.
Additionally, during the interview, Wall talked about Mass Effect 2’s highly anticipated Suicide Mission. He mentioned that contributing to its creation was the most challenging and mind-boggling experience he had ever encountered throughout his entire career. Since the developers were under immense pressure to complete the game, he found himself working largely on his own for the music aspect. However, he commended BioWare’s team for delivering a remarkable product in the end.
To make it function, they needed considerable adjustments from their side, yet they managed it successfully. The outcome was truly remarkable – one of the finest concluding scenes in any game I’ve experienced. All the hard work was definitely worth it,” he expressed.
Following Mass Effect 2, Wall moved on to contribute to the Call of Duty franchise, starting with Black Ops 3 in 2015. He also composed music for Black Ops 4, Black Ops Cold War, Call of Duty: Vanguard, Modern Warfare 3 (released in 2023), and most recently, Black Ops 6.
Regarding the Mass Effect series, it’s known that BioWare is currently developing the next installment within the franchise. Their previous release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, didn’t quite hit Electronic Arts’ targets, which unfortunately led to some staff reductions at the studio.
