‘Mass Effect’ Amazon TV Series Sets ‘Star Trek Beyond’ Writer Doug Jung as Showrunner

It’s been confirmed that Doug Jung will take up the role of showrunner for the “Mass Effect” television series being developed by Amazon MGM Studios, as previously reported by EbMaster.

Previously, EbMaster was the first to announce that a show adaptation was being developed as far back as November. Daniel Casey continues to be in charge of writing and producing this adaptation, with Jung now additionally serving as executive producer and showrunner. Karim Zreik will also serve as an executive producer under his production company Cedar Tree Productions, while Ari Arad and Michael Gamble from EA will continue in their roles as executive producers. Amazon MGM Studios currently has a deal in place with Cedar Tree Productions.

More recently, Jung held the position of executive producer on the upcoming historical drama “Chief of War,” starring Jason Momoa, which premieres in August on Apple TV+. Previously, he was involved in television series such as “Mindhunter” on Netflix, “Banshee” at Cinemax, and “Big Love” at HBO. Additionally, Jung collaborated on the script for the 2016 film “Star Trek Beyond” with Simon Pegg.

He is repped by UTA, Circle Management + Production, and Hansen Jacobson.

In 2021, it was previously mentioned that Amazon was discussing the creation of a “Mass Effect” TV show, but since then, there have been no new announcements about this venture. Previously, efforts had been made to produce a movie adaptation of the games, yet those attempts never came to fruition.

2007 saw the initial release of “Mass Effect,” a game that received widespread acclaim. Since then, four more main series games have followed, including “Mass Effect: Andromeda” in 2017. The franchise has expanded to encompass various mobile games, an animated film, novels, comic books, and additional media as well.

The “Mass Effect” series initially centers around Commander Shepard, a human soldier in the 22nd century, who fights to protect humanity from an alien race called the Reapers. The story progresses through the first three games. However, “Andromeda” shifts the setting and introduces a new protagonist, while work continues on a fifth game. BioWare is responsible for developing this franchise, which is now published by EA.

Deadline first reported Jung’s involvement in the “Mass Effect” series.
