Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ Teaser Links to A24 Hits: What You Need to Know!

The newest sneak peek for “Thunderbolts” hints at a connection between this Marvel film and the cinematic universe associated with independent film sensation, A24.

Instead of sticking to the typical grandiose orchestral scores and large-scale action sequences characteristic of Marvel productions, this fresh clip opts for sleek techno tunes and title cards emphasizing that numerous cast members, creators, and craftspeople associated with this project have previously collaborated on A24 films.

Initially showcased by Letterboxd, an “exclusive first peek” combines scenes of Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in their Marvel costumes (as Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes a.k.a. the Winter Soldier, and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine) with their filmography from A24 productions (“Midsommar,” “A Different Man,” and “You Hurt My Feelings”).

The Marvel Studios logo receives a unique A24-style transformation in this teaser, showcasing credit cards for “the editor of ‘Minari'” (Harry Yoon), “the writers and director of ‘Beef'” (Jake Schreier, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo). The cinematographer of “The Green Knight,” Andrew Droz Palermo, along with the production designer of “Hereditary,” Grace Yun, are both acknowledged. Lastly, the composers of “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” Son Lux, are included in the creative collaboration.

The video was jointly produced with Schreier, who hinted at the movie’s style during an interview with EbMaster at last year’s Comic-Con event.

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, aimed to create something unique right from the start, as Schreier clarified. He commended his creative partners like Lee, Calo, and Eric Pearson, who wrote the initial script, for their contributions. Essentially, if you can envision a Marvel film that mirrors the style of other projects they’ve worked on, and contemplate where those styles might intersect, then that’s the kind of movie we believe we’ve produced.

Lately, Pugh has labeled the movie as an “edgy indie-style assassin flick with a touch of Marvel superheroes,” according to Empire Magazine. And indeed, it appears that Marvel is emphasizing this cinematic quality in their promotional efforts for the film.

Without being privy to the marketing strategy, A24 playfully reacted to the video through X by sharing a meme featuring Alexa Demie’s character Maddy from “Euphoria” (their popular HBO series), questioning, “Hold up, is this supposed drama about us?

The movie, set to release on May 2nd, features Pugh alongside David Harbour, who played Red Guardian in “Black Widow”, as former Marvel villains compelled to collaborate and perform undercover missions for the U.S. government. The team, known as “Thunderbolts”, also includes Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster from “Black Widow”), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost from “Ant-Man and the Wasp”), Wyatt Russell (John Walker from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”), and Lewis Pullman, star of “Top Gun: Maverick”, who plays a new character named Bob with a mysterious background.

The popular comic book series “Thunderbolts,” originally penned by Kurt Busiek, is overseen by Marvel Studios’ head, Kevin Feige, in its production. Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez and Scarlett Johansson all take on executive producer roles for this project.
