Marvel’s Devil’s Reign in Jeopardy

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again.

In the conclusion of “Daredevil: Born Again” season 1, a monumental new tale for the MCU was laid out, however, Marvel Studios could be on the verge of repeating one of the biggest oversights from “Secret Invasion.” Following an intense finale that premiered on Disney+ on April 15, Marvel has left numerous questions unanswered regarding Charlie Cox’s Man Without Fear, which will probably be addressed in next year’s “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2. The upcoming season is anticipated to delve into one of Daredevil’s most renowned storylines from the Marvel Comics, but regrettably, Marvel may unavoidably introduce some changes that cannot be rectified.

For much of the first season of “Daredevil: Born Again,” Matt Murdock had stepped away from his role as Daredevil, focusing on being a lawyer instead. Simultaneously, Wilson Fisk, portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio, had given up being the Kingpin to become the Mayor of New York City. However, as the season progressed, both characters reverted to their old ways, leading to a thrilling conclusion. By then, New York was under military rule, Commissioner Gallo was dead, and vigilantes were outlawed. The Anti-Vigilante Task Force was created, Fisk’s adversaries were imprisoned, and Marvel has prepared one of the best Daredevil comic book stories.

Born Again’s Finale Just Set Up My Favorite Daredevil Storyline From Marvel Comics

Daredevil: Born Again Started The MCU’s Devil’s Reign Storyline

It quickly became apparent that Marvel Studios was laying the groundwork for the “Devil’s Reign” adaptation in the first season of “Daredevil: Born Again.” This was hinted at in the post-credits scene of 2024’s “Echo,” where Wilson Fisk showed signs of running for New York City Mayor. This is significant because it mirrors the central premise of Marvel Comics’ “Devil’s Reign” event from 2021. In this storyline, the Mayor (in this case, Fisk) prohibited vigilantism in New York City and employed the Purple Man’s powers and his villainous Thunderbolts units to enforce these laws. However, the city’s heroes rallied against him.

Written by Chip Zdarsky and illustrated by Marco Checchetto, “Devil’s Reign” unfolded from December 2021 to May 2022, swiftly gaining significance in the tales of Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, affecting New York City as a whole. In this narrative, Mayor Fisk amassed nearly unchecked power, a theme now being delved into in the MCU, with Kingpin taking full control. I’m eagerly anticipating how “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2 will expand on the Devil’s Reign storyline, but it seems Marvel might be laying the groundwork for its own downfall.

I’m Worried Marvel Will Make The MCU’s Devil’s Reign Much Smaller Than The Marvel Comics Story

The MCU’s Devil’s Reign Might Not Include The Same Marvel Comics Roster

It’s thrilling to witness the beginning of the exploration of “Devil’s Reign” in the MCU, but given its massive scale, encompassing numerous spinoffs and subplots within Marvel Comics, it may be too expansive to fit into a single season of “Daredevil: Born Again“. In fact, “Devil’s Reign” isn’t merely a Daredevil storyline in the comics; instead, the Man Without Fear collaborates with nearly every other superhero active in New York City as Kingpin’s new law disrupts all of them. Regrettably, it appears that “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2 will undergo significant changes to adapt the Marvel Comics story.

Charlie Cox’s MCU Project Year Role
Daredevil Season 1 2015 Lead
Daredevil Season 2 2016 Lead
The Defenders 2017 Main Cast
Daredevil Season 3 2018 Lead
Spider-Man: No Way Home 2021 Cameo
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law 2022 Supporting Cast
Echo 2024 Cameo
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man 2025 Animated Cameo
Daredevil: Born Again 2025 Lead

In the Marvel Comics universe, Mayor Wilson Fisk’s prohibition of vigilantes in New York City results in popular superheroes like Captain America, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Spider-Man, Moon Knight, and many others becoming entangled in a struggle against Kingpin. The upcoming Daredevil: Born Again season 2 appears to be making an effort to adapt the Devil’s Reign storyline more faithfully into the MCU. However, this extensive narrative is likely to be scaled down considerably for its live-action portrayal, which might make an unusual selection given that it could resemble Phase 5’s most contentious series. This means that Born Again may borrow elements from Phase 5’s most controversial series.

Marvel Already Made This Change With Secret Invasion & It Didn’t Work

Marvel’s Secret Invasion Story Was Changed Significantly & For The Worse In The MCU

It’s not uncommon for Marvel Studios to adjust large comic book storylines like Devil’s Reign to fit better within the MCU. For instance, the extensive 2008 Secret Invasion saga in Marvel Comics was a grand event, with almost every Earth-based character joining forces to combat a devastating Skrull invasion and numerous Avengers being unmasked as Skrull impostors over time. However, the on-screen adaptation of this storyline didn’t follow suit, suggesting that it may be scaled down for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

2023’s “Secret Invasion” series, marking Samuel L. Jackson’s initial solo venture as Nick Fury within the MCU, unfortunately faced a significant amount of criticism and backlash. A key factor contributing to this was the modifications it introduced to Marvel Comics’ “Secret Invasion” event. Unlike the comic storyline that featured numerous superheroes, including the Avengers, the live-action “Secret Invenson” consistently portrayed Nick Fury resisting the urge to summon his super-allies. This alteration significantly diluted the charm of the “Secret Invasion” storyline as it was in Marvel Comics, and I fear that Marvel might apply a similar approach to “Devil’s Reign” in “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2.

How Can The MCU’s Devil’s Reign Be As Comic-Accurate As Possible?

Marvel Needs To Be Careful Not To Ruin The Devil’s Reign Storyline

It seems quite plausible that Marvel Studios will need to scale down the Devil’s Reign storyline to fit within the constraints of Daredevil: Born Again season 2. This adjustment might lead to fewer prominent superheroes in New York City being involved in the narrative. However, there are strategies Marvel Studios can employ to keep the Devil’s Reign tale as faithful to its comic book roots as possible within the MCU, and avoid the pitfalls of a storyline like Secret Invasion. One such approach could be incorporating some street-level heroes into Daredevil’s new force, possibly inviting former Defenders members like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Rand to join the fray.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I believe Marvel Studios could amplify the scope of the “Devil’s Reign” arc by weaving its themes into various forthcoming productions, not limiting it to the 2026 season 2 of “Daredevil: Born Again.” New York-based stories such as *Thunderbolts*, Vision Quest, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the Punisher’s upcoming Special Presentation could all delve into the consequences of Mayor Wilson Fisk’s actions. This approach would make “Devil’s Reign” as grand and transformative as its comic book counterpart, with “Daredevil: Born Again” serving merely as the beginning of this extraordinary new chapter in the MCU.
