Marvel’s ‘Blade’ Reboot: Kevin Feige Says the ‘Most Important Thing Is Not Rushing It’ After ‘Two Years’ of ‘Trying to Crack That Movie,’ Teases R-Rating

As a longtime cinephile with a deep appreciation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I’m always excited to hear updates about upcoming projects from the studio. However, the development of the “Blade” reboot has been a rollercoaster ride, and as someone who’s followed this project closely since Mahershala Ali was cast in the title role back in 2019, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation tinged with frustration.

During an interview with BlackTree TV on his “Deadpool & Wolverine” press tour, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige discussed their long-planned “Blade” reboot. Mahershala Ali, a two-time Oscar winner, is attached to star in this upcoming project. Announced in July 2019, the development of “Blade” has faced challenges with various writers and directors leaving the project over the years. According to Feige, taking their time with the film’s production is crucial for Marvel Studios.

As a big fan of Marvel movies, I can tell you that during an interview, Feige was questioned about the possibility of including “Blade” alongside “Deadpool” and “Wolverine.” He revealed that the MCU’s first R-rated film, “Deadpool,” is crucial to preserving Deadpool’s true character. In a similar vein, Feige hinted that Blade would need to maintain his R-rating to fit seamlessly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Feige expressed his belief: “For the past two years in our efforts to produce the ‘Blade’ movie, our top priority hasn’t been to hurry up but rather to ensure we create the best possible version.”

Feige explained, “The success of the ‘Blade’ films in the past, which were all rated R, is what makes the character of Blade similar to Deadpool.”

I was thrilled when Blade made his debut on the silver screen for the very first time in “Blade” (1998), played brilliantly by Wesley Snipes. His journey continued with Guillermo del Toro’s direction in “Blade II” (2002) and reached its climax in “Blade: Trinity” (2004).

In July 2019, Marvel officially unveiled its “Blade” production with Ali in the lead role. Initially, Bassam Tariq was appointed as the director. However, he left the project around September 2022, just about two months before filming was scheduled to start. Throughout the years, various screenwriters have been revealed for this movie, including Stacy Osei-Kuffour from “Watchmen” and Michael Starrbury.

Last November, EbMaster shared that the “Blade” project had been through at least five scriptwriters. A source close to the production revealed that the tale underwent significant transformation and evolved into a female-centric narrative rich in moral lessons. It was rumored that Marvel was considering moving forward with the film, but with a production budget below $100 million.

Marvel’s “Blade” is currently on the release calendar for Nov. 7, 2025.
