Marvel Studios has released new artwork featuring both of its iconic Captain Americas. Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) have each been Captain America. But after Steve Rogers aged and passed the shield to Sam Wilson in *Avengers: Endgame*, the two heroes haven’t been shown together until now.
Although we haven’t seen them side-by-side in a movie yet, the two Captain Americas – Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson – are now featured together on the cover of the ‘Marvel Studios: The Art of Ryan Meinerding 2026 Cinematic Wall Calendar’. This is the first time official Marvel Studios artwork has shown both characters in their Captain America costumes together, and the reveal was made on Instagram.
This artwork first appeared in a book showcasing the work of Ryan Meinerding, Marvel Studios’ Head of Visual Development. Now, it’s also the cover image for the official 2026 calendar, which is essentially a larger, more presentable version of the original book.
Although both Rogers and Wilson have taken on the role of Captain America and carry the same shield, their costumes look quite different. Rogers’ suit includes a blue helmet with an ‘A’ on it, and a patriotic uniform originally designed for him during his service in World War II.
Anthony Mackie’s character, who first appeared as the hero Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, became the new Captain America at the end of *The Falcon and the Winter Soldier*. His updated suit blends elements of both his Falcon and Captain America identities. It includes wings made of vibranium that can fold away, a visor with protective lenses, and a color scheme that’s mostly white and blue.
This is the first time the two actors who have played Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have appeared together on a promotional poster, though they’ve previously collaborated on other Marvel marketing materials.
New artwork for the upcoming Avengers: Infinity Defense ride at Disney California Adventure depicts Captain America and Falcon teaming up with over a dozen other Marvel heroes to battle the ride’s villain, Thanos.
Although the new Avengers: Infinity Defense attraction will bring together many MCU heroes, it’s important to remember that events at Disney’s theme parks aren’t considered official parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The attraction might be inspired by Marvel stories and characters, but the team-up between Sam and Steve within it won’t be considered canon.
Chris Evans last played Steve Rogers/Captain America in the 2019 film *Avengers: Endgame*. Since then, Anthony Mackie has taken on the role of Captain America in both *The Falcon and the Winter Soldier* and *Captain America: Brave New World*.
Will Two Captain Americas Ever Appear Together On-Screen?
Though Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie have shared many scenes as Captain America and Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they’ve never actually appeared on screen *as* both Captain Americas at the same time. This is because of the story’s timeline: when Steve Rogers passes the shield to Sam Wilson in *Avengers: Endgame*, Rogers has already traveled back in time to live a full life with Peggy Carter and is now an elderly man, finished with being a superhero.
Originally, having two Captain Americas operating in the main Marvel universe (Earth-616) wouldn’t have worked. But now that the MCU is exploring the Multiverse, things that once seemed impossible are now potentially achievable.
There’s talk that Chris Evans might return as Captain America in the next Avengers movie, which will also feature Anthony Mackie as Captain America. Because the Marvel Cinematic Universe uses time travel and alternate realities, we might finally see multiple Captain Americas-and their allies-fighting alongside each other on the big screen.
