Marvel Says ‘X-Men ’97’ Creator Beau DeMayo Was Fired for ‘Egregious’ Misconduct After He Alleges Disney Stripped Credit Over Gay Pride Post

As a long-time Marvel fan and someone who has followed Beau DeMayo‘s work with great admiration, I find myself disheartened by this recent turn of events. It’s not often that we get to see such bold, risky storytelling in Marvel’s animated series, and “X-Men ’97” was a shining example of that.

In an unusual move, I found myself sharing news about my unexpected departure from Marvel Studios in March 2024. The reason behind this sudden change, as I’ve learned, was due to a post I shared on various social media platforms that expressed support for LGBTQ+ pride. It seems that this expression of inclusivity conflicted with the studio’s creative decisions regarding my writing credits for the show’s second season.

In a statement issued, it was announced that Mr. DeMayo was let go from the studio in March 2024 after an internal examination. The seriousness of the conclusions compelled us to end our association with him promptly, and he is now no longer connected with Marvel in any capacity.

According to a well-informed source, the investigation was about allegations of sexual misconduct, and it was found that DeMayo repeatedly breached his termination conditions. This violation resulted in the revocation of his involvement in Season 2.

Last Thursday evening, DeMayo shared an image that seems to be of him, bare-chested and resembling the character Cyclops. He captioned it with: “I’m incredibly thankful for having been part of #XMen97, working alongside some incredibly gifted individuals. Bringing this revival to life was a long-cherished dream, and the fan response has been heartwarmingly wonderful. Nevertheless, I feel compelled to express my thoughts following my departure from the show.”

As a proud contributor to the iconic #XMen97 reboot, I can’t express enough gratitude for the extraordinary team I had the pleasure of working alongside. Bringing this beloved franchise back to life was nothing short of a dream realized. The outpouring of love and support from fans has been truly heartwarming. Yet, as someone who values honesty and transparency, it feels necessary for me to share my perspective on my departure from the show…

“He went on to say, ‘The artwork I shared on Instagram for Pride Month was inspired by the X-Men. Unfortunately, Marvel responded by removing my credit for Season 2 because of that post. This is just the latest incident in a series of problems I’ve faced while working on X-Men and Blade.’ “

DeMayo expressed, “I’ll share more thoughts with you shortly, but I need to temporarily withdraw from social media to find a secure environment where I can openly express myself as an out, proud, and geeky individual. Keep an eye on this space for updates.”

In March 2024, I found myself unexpectedly parting ways with the production team, just before the series premiere. Prior to my departure, I had penned Seasons 1 and 2 of this animated marvel, so to speak. Working on “Moon Knight,” another Marvel and Disney+ series, as well as contributing to the script for the highly anticipated feature film “Blade” featuring Mahershala Ali, were among my last tasks with the studio.

“The animated series ‘X-Men ’97’ made its debut with some of Marvel’s top-rated reviews on Disney+. Critics commended it for its daring, innovative storytelling and well-developed characters. The program was even Emmy-nominated as the best animated show; however, DeMayo announced on Twitter that the studio hasn’t contacted him to attend the Emmys for the series he created.”

Throughout the course of its first season, DeMayo frequently shared detailed comments about particular episodes and storylines with X. Before his termination, he also managed an account on OnlyFans that was not explicit, using the username “Beaunlyfans.” In 2022, Out magazine labeled DeMayo as “the sexually attractive, gay Marvel and showrunner to keep tabs on.”

EbMaster has reached out to DeMayo for further comment.

More to come.
