As a long-time Marvel fan who’s been through the rollercoaster of free-to-play games, I must admit my excitement is palpable! After years of waiting for a decent Marvel shooter, NetEase seems to be getting it right with Marvel Rivals. The fact that they’re not going to charge for access to characters is a breath of fresh air.
In simple terms, Marvel Rivals developers assured us that they will never require payment for access to their vast array of playable characters, both heroes and villains. They also shared details about the game’s monetization strategies.
NetEase discussed their strategy for monetizing the upcoming free-to-play hero shooter in a recent “Developer Talk” post. Essentially, they plan to sell only cosmetic items in the game using two types of currency: Latice, which is premium, and Units, which is free. They will offer various cosmetic bundles for purchase, giving players the option to buy individual costumes for specific characters or opt for discounted bundle deals that include costumes, MVP animations, emotes, a spray, and nameplates.

NetEase stated that their team has put in significant work on creating and refining these in-game cosmetic items, which often take inspiration from iconic Marvel comics, movies, and other works. These items serve not just as a homage to Marvel’s artistic heritage, but also as an opportunity for us to express diverse aspects of the Marvel universe through our unique interpretations.
In simple terms, the extensive collection of characters in Marvel Rivals (currently over 30 and growing) can be played by everyone at no cost. Plus, additional characters, battlefields, and game enhancements that come with future updates will also be provided free of charge, as highlighted by NetEase.
Much like many other shooting games, Marvel Rivals features seasonal battle passes. Unlike many games within this genre, though, purchased battle passes won’t vanish at the conclusion of a season. Instead, players can keep advancing on previously owned battle passes even after a season ends, similar to how the battle pass system functions in Halo Infinite.
As a passionate fan, I’m excited to share that for the inaugural season, affectionately known as Season 0, the battle pass will be scaled down compared to regular ones. This adjustment is due to the shorter duration of the season. To keep things fair, the price will also be reduced by half, making it approximately $5 compared to the usual $10 for standard battle passes.
NetEase mentions that you can acquire free cosmetics by reaching achievements or taking part in different events. These units, which are up for grabs when you complete achievements or engage in events, can be utilized to buy cosmetics. Additionally, these units are found within the Luxury battle pass too.
In a recent unveil, the game resembling Overwatch, titled “Marvel Rivals,” announced a series of new characters such as Wolverine, Squirrel Girl, and Black Widow. Set to launch on December 6th globally (December 5th for North America), this action-packed title can be pre-downloaded now on PC.
