As a dedicated Overwatch 2 player and a proud member of the Mercy community, I can confidently say that we are the ultimate diehards! Despite the allure of Marvel Rivals and its fresh take on the hero shooter genre, nothing can tear us away from our beloved game.
The Mercy nation stands tall, unyielding even in the face of Overwatch 2’s overall decline in players. We may not have the numbers, but we sure do have the heart! With play rates higher than ever, it’s clear that we are a force to be reckoned with.
Marvel Rivals might have some impressive healers like Cloak & Dagger and Luna Snow, but they just can’t compare to our beloved Mercy. Her unique movement tech and gameplay mechanics set her apart from the rest. Even Adam Warlock and Cloak & Dagger can’t match her survivability and verticality. Rocket Raccoon’s wallrunning is cute, but it’s finicky at best!
I must admit, I’ve been enjoying this increase in Mercy play rate. It seems Marvel Rivals has unintentionally boosted our numbers. So, if you find a Mercy in your future comp games, remember, you might have Marvel Rivals to thank for that!

Marvel Rivals has been drawing players away from Overwatch 2 significantly due to its innovative approach in the hero shooter genre. Though Overwatch 2 continues to hold its ground with collaborations such as Avatar: The Last Airbender and events like the 6v6 playtest and Hazard’s release, it now faces a formidable competitor within the genre for the first time.
Nevertheless, although Marvel Rivals has shown impressive results, a significant number of players in Overwatch 2 continue to be devoted to it. The Mercy community, in particular, stands firm, with playing numbers higher than ever before, even as the player base for the game as a whole declines.
Marvel Rivals lacks a strong counterpart to Mercy
Mercy is an exceptional champion with a distinctive ability to help players who may not have strong skills in first-person shooter (FPS) games succeed. Unlike many other champions, her healing and utility don’t rely on accuracy in aiming; instead, they reward overall game awareness and proficiency in her unique movement techniques. This special kit has resulted in a hero that, despite some moments of weakness, continues to be one of the most widely-played characters in Overwatch 2.
As per Overbuff’s data, since the recent update and Marvel Rivals launch, Mercy has experienced a noticeable boost in play frequency. On consoles, her win rate has risen by approximately 1% over the past few months, and she has also seen similar improvements on PC. This is particularly noteworthy because each team requires two support players, making these gains relatively significant.
Moreover, it’s worth noting that Marvel Rivals doesn’t have a character akin to Mercy who embodies her distinctive movement abilities. Although Marvel Rivals does feature healers like Cloak & Dagger and Luna Snow that are easy to use, there is currently no character in the game that mirrors Mercy’s gameplay style.
As a longtime Overwatch player with countless hours under my belt, I find that Adam Warlock and Cloak & Dagger are two characters who excel in providing healing without needing pinpoint accuracy, which is a refreshing change from many other support heroes. However, they lack the survivability and mobility that Mercy offers due to her movement abilities, making them more vulnerable in combat situations.
Unfortunately, Rocket Raccoon seems to be the only support character who possesses unique movement tech, but his wall-running can sometimes be finicky at best, leaving players frustrated when it doesn’t work as intended. In my experience, having a reliable and easy-to-use mobility option for supports is crucial in keeping them alive during intense team fights.
In conclusion, while Adam Warlock, Cloak & Dagger, and Rocket Raccoon each have their unique strengths, I believe that a more consistent movement ability for the support class would significantly improve their overall performance in Overwatch.
It’s been observed within the gaming community that Mercy is being played more frequently, and it seems she’ll continue to be one of the top choices for supports. This trend could be due in part to her popularity in the Marvel Rivals game.
