Marvel Rivals employees arrested for allegedly laundering over $130M

As a long-time fan of NetEase games and Marvel Rivals in particular, I must admit that this recent turn of events has left me both intrigued and concerned. On one hand, the beta for Marvel Rivals was absolutely fantastic, and it had all the potential to become a real contender in the hero shooter genre, especially with the failure of Concord.

Officials have apprehended executives and programmers from the development and distribution company, Marvel Rivals (NetEase), due to accusations of a suspected money laundering operation. If true, the estimated illicit funds involved could reach approximately $139 million.

As Marvel Rivals approaches, there’s a palpable sense of excitement at NetEase. The beta test was remarkably successful, and it seems poised to enter the arena swinging, potentially challenging Overwatch in the hero shooter genre – a genre that recently experienced one of its biggest setbacks with Concord.

Instead, there was an unwanted kind of thrill in the office when nine workers were taken into custody for suspected involvement in a money laundering case. As reported by Chinese news source Leifeng, executive Xiang Lang and several other ex-employees are accused of laundering funds through contracts with up to 28 various business associates.

Due to a change in location for their weekly gathering, these workers were unexpectedly apprehended by authorities when the meeting venue shifted from Guangzhou to Hangzhou, as part of an undercover operation at the newly chosen site.

Although specifics are limited because it’s an ongoing inquiry, it’s suspected that as much as 1 Billion Chinese Yuan, which equates to approximately 139 Million USD, could have been laundered. This money is believed to stem from business transactions within the company, which amounted to around 2 Billion Chinese Yuan. The exact figure won’t be known until the investigation is completed.

Currently, the ongoing sting operation and executives’ arrest at Marvel Rivals’ company have not disrupted their planned release schedule. They’ve unexpectedly unveiled Moon Knight as a fresh character before launch, who wasn’t initially playable during the beta. The game is still set for its debut on December 6, 2024.

It’s worth noting that Marvel Rivals isn’t NetEase’s only venture into game development; they’ve also made significant strides with other titles. In fact, many of their games are more popular in China and Asia compared to the US, but games like Naraka: Bladepoint and Once Human have managed to gain traction in Western markets.

Wow, I can’t believe it! There’s this amazing mobile gacha game inspired by Dead by Daylight, but instead of horror icons, it features our beloved Tom and Jerry characters. And guess what? It even has an actual esports scene! Yes, you heard it right – there are Tom and Jerry esports tournaments happening! This is just too cool!

It’s uncertain if this dispute will influence Marvel Rivals and NetEase overall, considering their future operations, not just for the employees who have already been dismissed from the company.
