Marvel ‘Exploring’ the Returns of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist in the MCU; Charlie Cox Recalls ‘Some Feud Between Netflix and Disney’

As a devoted fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the potential return of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Finn Jones as Iron Fist/Danny Rand, and Charlie Cox as Daredevil, as Marvel Studios’ head honcho, Brad Winderbaum, hinted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. They each led their own Marvel series on Netflix and were unstoppable together in “The Defenders.” Now that Cox’s Daredevil has transitioned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is spearheading his own Disney+ series, I can only hope that this new journey will also pave the way for their former Netflix co-stars.

Winderbaum commented, “I’m not able to reveal much, but let me tell you, it’s thrilling to have the opportunity to work in such a creative playground. Of course, compared to comic books, we don’t have the same level of freedom when it comes to storytelling. We need to navigate actors, time constraints, and the vastness of production to create a cinematic universe, especially on television. But given all these challenges, I can assure you that it is creatively very exciting, and we are definitely delving into it.

The Netflix-Marvel collaboration began when “Daredevil” premiered in April 2015, followed by three other superhero series and “The Defenders” in 2017. All these shows were subsequently canceled between 2018 and 2019, preceding the November 2019 debut of Disney+. A contractual agreement prohibited Netflix’s Marvel characters from appearing in any non-Netflix series or movies for at least two years after each show’s cancellation. This is why Charlie Cox, who played Daredevil in Netflix, didn’t appear in the MCU until “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in 2021, four years later. He resurfaced in 2022’s “She-Hulk,” and now stars as the main character in his first MCU project titled “Daredevil: Born Again.

Recently, Cox chatted with GQ magazine regarding the evening he discovered his Netflix series had been terminated. He recounted, “I received a late-night call, and my Marvel TV superior at the time informed me, ‘They’ve taken down all the shows. All five of them.’ There was some… I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it felt like a discussion about the complex business dynamics behind it, perhaps a disagreement between Netflix and Disney. My superiors from Netflix and Marvel called afterwards, were extremely courteous, and diplomatic, but the decision had already been made.

Last year, it was disclosed in an interview with People magazine that the actor of “Daredevil” initially received a proposal from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige regarding a possible comeback as Daredevil within the MCU as far back as 2020.
