As a seasoned movie critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen Marvel Studios weave some of the most intricately crafted narratives in modern cinema. However, the latest announcement regarding the upcoming Avengers films, “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” has left me both intrigued and perplexed.
The title of “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” has been changed significantly. Instead, the upcoming Avengers movies will be called “Avengers: Endgame Part 2 – Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Both films will be helmed by the Russo Brothers.
Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors, are teaming up with Marvel Studios once more to lead the production of the next superhero team-up movie. They confirmed their involvement during San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H event on Saturday night, receiving a warm welcome from the enthusiastic crowd.
At the event, Joe Russo shared, “During ‘Avengers: Endgame’ production, we genuinely felt it was our last hurrah in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The four films leading up to that point were an incredible journey creatively, but left us drained.” However, they stumbled upon a remarkable tale – one so significant, it’s considered the grandest saga in Marvel comics. This compelling narrative brought Anthony and me back. And guess what? It’s none other than “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
To create an impressive lead-up to the grand clash of “Secret Wars,” the story necessitates a crucial character. Enter Doomsday, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., who significantly contributed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s success with his charismatic portrayal of Iron Man/Tony Stark. The initial movie, titled “Avengers: Doomsday,” is scheduled for release in May 2026, while “Avengers: Secret Wars” is planned for a May 2027 premiere.
The Russo brothers take over directing duties from Destin Daniel Cretton, who departed the project in November 2023 to prioritize other Marvel assignments, including a potential sequel to his 2021 hit “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” Michael Waldron, creator of Disney+’s “Loki” series for Marvel, is penning the scripts for this “Avengers” film and its subsequent installment, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” aimed to serve as the grand finale of what Kevin Feige named the Multiverse Saga in 2022.
The Russo brothers have a rich history with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’ve helmed the last two “Avengers” installments, “Infinity War” and “Endgame,” as well as “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Civil War.” Following their successful tenure on the Marvel films, which grossed over $4 billion collectively, the Russo brothers moved on to direct Netflix’s “Cherry,” a raw crime drama featuring Tom Holland. They also signed up for “The Gray Man,” an action-packed thriller on Netflix starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, and are currently working on “The Electric State” for the streaming platform.
After Jonathan Majors, the actor portraying Marvel supervillain Kang for two years, was convicted of misdemeanor assault and harassment against his ex-girlfriend in December, it became clear to many that the decision to change “The Kang Dynasty” title was imminent. Following the verdict, the studio swiftly severed ties with Majors within two hours. The past year had been filled with doubt regarding Majors’ future with Marvel due to his arrest in March. However, the studio has yet to comment on whether this meant that the character of Kang would also be departing.
Precedent exists in Marvel for swapping out prominent actors: Don Cheadle succeeded Terrence Howard as James Rhodes in “Iron Man 2,” and Mark Ruffalo replaced Edward Norton as Bruce Banner in “The Avengers.” However, this occurred after the initial actor had only embodied the role once. Majors, on the other hand, has portrayed Kang multiple times, including in the first and second seasons of “Loki” and as the primary antagonist in 2023’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” In the mid-credits scene of this film, Majors even portrays an army of Kang variants. For any new actor to assume these roles would present a significant challenge.
More importantly, audiences haven’t exactly embraced Kang as a character, or the multiverse as a storytelling engine, in the same way that Thanos and the Infinity Saga served as sturdy narrative spines in the 2010’s. The Season 2 finale of “Loki” tied off Kang’s storyline so that Marvel could move on without unduly disrupting their wider plans for the Multiverse Saga. With this new title, that appears to be exactly what the studio is doing.
