As a cinephile, I was thrilled to catch a glimpse of “Eyes of Wakanda,” an enticing animation spin-off from the renowned “Black Panther” series, during its debut screening at the prestigious Annecy Animation Festival in France this past Monday.
Before the question-and-answer segment, Todd Harris, the director, began the episode entitled “Into the Lion’s Den.
The first installment of a four-part series is set in 1260 B.C., featuring the storyline of Noni, a fallen Dora Milaje who serves as a secret agent from Wakanda (portrayed by Winnie Harlow). She is on a mission to capture ‘Lion’ (played by Cress Williams), a rogue ex-Wakandan guard who has since led a pirate gang. Lion, with his newfound power, has stolen advanced technology from Wakanda, intending to establish his own kingdom.
In every 30-minute installment, produced by Axis Animation, we’ll witness events unfold across various timeframes, ranging over centuries. These stories revolve around distinct artifacts, as described by director Todd Harris in an “anthology adjacent” style. He also hinted at recognizable Marvel characters gracing the screen: “Prepare for an Iron Fist, but not the one you’re used to.
More to come.
