Marvel And X-Men '97 Showrunner Have Stated Different Reasons For His Firing

As a gamer with a keen eye for behind-the-scenes drama, I must say this X-Men ’97 Season 2 saga feels like a level I can’t seem to beat on my favorite RPG game. The tension between Beau DeMayo and Marvel is reminiscent of a epic boss fight, where every move, every statement, is analyzed and speculated upon by fans worldwide.

The conflict between Marvel and Beau DeMayo, the former showrunner of the X-Men ’97 animated series, has intensified this week. Marvel has decided to take away any credit for Season 2 and future productions from DeMayo. The revamped 1990s X-Men series, which was recently nominated for an Emmy award, finds DeMayo excluded from the show mere weeks before its debut on Disney+.

It wasn’t made clear by either side why DeMayo was taken off the series prior to Season 1. However, he has since spoken out about his name being excluded from Season 2, even though scripts for these episodes were penned before his dismissal. DeMayo initially alluded to potential discrimination with his initial actions.

Initially, I’m deeply appreciative for being part of X-Men ’97, working alongside incredibly skilled individuals. Bringing this revival to life was a long-cherished dream, and the fan response has been heartwarming. Yet, it feels necessary for me to express my thoughts following my departure from the show… (DeMayo wrote on social media)

Later, he shared a fan-created artwork depicting himself in minimal attire as Cyclops. This work of art was initially posted on his Instagram account on June 4, to commemorate the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month.

He went on to say, “The Instagram post you see above is fan-art of X-Men that I shared in support of Gay Pride Month. Unfortunately, Marvel later informed me that they had removed my credit from Season 2 because of this post. This incident is just the latest in a series of troublesome experiences I’ve faced while working on X-Men ’97 and Blade. I have more to share about this soon, but for now, I need to step away from social media to find a safer environment where I can be open, proud, and geeky. Stay tuned.”

As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but share that Marvel Studios promptly responded to various media outlets regarding Mr. DeMayo. In their own words, “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation.” Due to the gravity of the findings, they swiftly cut ties with him and he no longer holds any connection to Marvel.

According to reports close to the situation, THR states that DeMayo was initially let go due to allegations of sexual misconduct. After his departure, a compromise was made between the parties regarding DeMayo’s tweets about the show, which he occasionally posted to boost fan interest. DeMayo denies breach of contract as the reason for his silence on this matter.

“Truthfully, the situation is unfolding. Following the setback on Disney Plus, Marvel seems to be attempting damage control by accusing parties of broken contracts over tweets, as DeMayo stated. Regrettably, it’s not shocking that it’s reached this point. Keep an eye out for further developments.”

DeMayo had been working at Marvel for a few years, contributing to the Moon Knight Disney+ series and working on a Blade script treatment for the movie. He’s also worked on Netflix’s The Witcher series.
