Previously, an idea similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s success in transforming the film industry through its connected movie series was presented to Disney by Bungie co-founder Alexander Seropian – this concept being a video game version of it.
In an episode of The Fourth Curtain podcast, Seropian and his guest Alex Irvine shared with IGN their proposal for a connected universe for future Marvel video games. However, executives from Disney declined this concept. Seropian, who was Vice President of game development for Disney’s gaming division until 2012, and Irvine, a writer credited on several Marvel games, mentioned that the idea never received funding, effectively ending its progression in the early stages of development.
At that moment, I was stepping out of ARGs (Alternate Reality Games) and contemplating, “How amazing would it be if our games incorporated elements of ARGs?” This hypothetical space would serve as a common ground for all our games, allowing seamless transitions between them. We could integrate comics, various media, and even create original content. Unfortunately, as Alex mentioned, the idea wasn’t funded. So, we focused on making multiple games instead.
Irvine mentioned that it was difficult to create a unique Marvel video game universe, distinct from the comics and movies, ultimately leading to the idea being abandoned. Now, each Marvel game, from Spider-Man to Guardians of the Galaxy, has its own individual universe. The only exception is Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game, as it will be set in the same Earth-1048 reality that Spider-Man inhabits. Other upcoming Marvel games include a Black Panther title from EA’s Cliffhanger Games and Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra from Skydance.
Speaking as a devoted fan, it’s been quite disheartening to see DC Comics’ stumble in the video game realm recently. The release of Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League didn’t live up to expectations for the studio, and unfortunately, the Wonder Woman game was also scrapped earlier this year. To add to that, Monolith Productions, along with Player First Games and WB San Diego, were among the studios shut down by Warner Bros. Games. Here’s hoping for a strong comeback from DC in the gaming world!
