Martin Short to Host ‘Match Game’ Revival on ABC

Martin Short is deepening his connection with Disney by agreeing to host the comeback of the popular gaming show “Match Game.

In the show “Match Game,” created by FremantleMedia North America, four contestants vie for a $25,000 prize by attempting to guess the answers given by six famous personalities in a game of completing sentences. Originally introduced in 1962 (with Gene Rayburn as host), this format has been reintroduced multiple times over the years.

Apart from its current iteration, ABC had previously aired “Match Game,” with Alec Baldwin as host. This particular show started airing in 2016 and lasted for five seasons, comprising around 69 episodes, until it was discontinued in 2022. The latest season, which began before the pandemic hit, encompassed nine episodes from May 31, 2020, to Oct. 29, 2020, with the final two airing on July 21 and July 28, 2021.

Alycia Rossiter, alongside Short (who is famously known for her role in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” and occasionally seen on ABC), will take up executive producer roles in the upcoming edition. In 1999, Short hosted a daytime talk show, while more recently, she has frequently stepped in as a guest host for ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”.

Baldwin’s TV show “Match Game” ended before his unfortunate accident on the set of “Rust” the previous fall. However, this decision wasn’t due to that incident because “Match Game” hadn’t been in production since 2020, long before the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, it aired only two new episodes in 2021, which were actually leftovers from the previous year.

Short is represented by WME and Brillstein Entertainment.
