Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio Attached to Hawaii-Set Crime Film From Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are set to develop a fresh movie concept originated by Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, with both parties involved in its production.

The crime thriller, filmed in Hawaii and being pitched to production companies and streaming platforms, is being likened within the industry to “The Departed” and “Goodfellas.” However, no agreements have been made yet, and the success of the project hinges on a distributor, as reported by several insiders knowledgeable about the project. The upcoming drama will be penned by author and journalist Nick Bilton, who was also behind the 2021 HBO documentary “Fake Famous.

Previously collaborating on “Jungle Cruise,” Johnson and Blunt approached Scorsese and DiCaprio with their new project. Upon showing interest, the four of them visited Bilton to discuss the possibility of him penning the script.

It might be that the filmmakers appear to be quite eager, as they are inspired by the upcoming partnership between Johnson and Blunt in “The Smashing Machine.” This A24 production, helmed by Benny Safdie, is said to mark a significant shift for Johnson towards more intense dramatic roles.

It’s clear that Scorsese and DiCaprio have built an iconic collaboration over the years, marked by standout films such as “The Departed,” “The Aviator,” “Gangs of New York,” “Shutter Island,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and last year’s Academy Award-nominated “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Currently, they are working together on a feature film adaptation of “The Devil in the White City,” a project that has been in development for some time; 20th Century Studios recently got involved with it last month.

Deadline was the first to report news of the hot package.
