As a cinephile with decades of film criticism under my belt, I must say that Martha Stewart‘s latest rant about “Martha” is as captivating as her famous pie crust recipe. It’s not every day you get such an unfiltered glimpse into the mind of a living legend.

Recently, Martha Stewart has been openly expressing her opinions about various matters. She shared insights with The New Yorker regarding an incident involving herself and Ina Garten. She further elaborated on these events during her appearance on Watch What Happens Live. Now, she’s delivered a critical appraisal of the Netflix documentary, “Martha,” to the New York Times. According to the NYT, Stewart launched a lengthy, almost uninterrupted critique of R.J. Cutler’s portrayal of her life. She expressed shock at Cutler’s approach, stating, “He had total access, and he really used very little.” Among the aspects she found problematic were the choice of music, the depiction of her as a frail elderly woman, and an overemphasis on her 2004 insider trading trial and prison sentence. Stewart considered these events insignificant compared to her overall life span of 83 years. She even referred to the trial as “extremely boring” and pointed out that not only was it uninteresting, but even the judge dozed off during it. Unfortunately, Cutler failed to include this detail in his documentary.

It’s understandable that someone might dwell on Martha Stewart’s trial when they think about her. However, another significant aspect of her life – her friendship with Snoop Dogg – was not adequately highlighted in the film’s soundtrack. Martha expressed her desire to have rap music, possibly composed by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, or Fredwreck, in the movie. Instead, the film received a classical score, which didn’t align with Martha’s preferences. There is a Snoop song during the end credits, but it wasn’t enough to satisfy Martha!

Stewart also criticized how Cutler filmed her. “He had three cameras on me. And he chooses to use the ugliest angle,” Stewart said. “And I told him, ‘Don’t use that angle! That’s not the nicest angle. You had three cameras. Use the other angle.’ He would not change that.” She also objected to the last scene, where Stewart is kind of hobbling in her garden. Turns out, she’d just had an operation on her Achilles’ tendon. “Those last scenes with me looking like a lonely old lady walking hunched over in the garden? Boy, I told him to get rid of those. And he refused,” she said. “I hate those last scenes. Hate them.” But other than that, pretty cool flick.
