Mark’s Outie Deserves Empathy Too: The Hidden Truth of Severance Season 2’s Ending

In the finale of Severance‘s second season, Mark’s innie’s choice might leave you sympathizing with the outie less, but various plot points throughout the series indicate that both versions of Mark warrant equal empathy. The ending of Severance season 1 is widely considered one of the most compelling final arcs in sci-fi TV. Although the conclusion of season 2 may not surpass it, it still offers a thought-provoking finish that lingers with viewers even after the credits play.

One intriguing aspect of the conclusion to Severance season 2 is the scene where Mark’s inner self stands at a critical juncture: he could either take a chance by trusting his outer self and depart from Lumon with Gemma, or put himself first by remaining within and nurturing his relationship with Helly. After careful consideration, his inner self decides to remain confined. As Gemma pounds on the stairway door, it’s difficult not to sympathize with her and his outer self. However, getting too wrapped up in empathy for Mark’s outward persona during these final moments of Severance season 2 might cause one to overlook the series’ central message.

Both Characters Have Been Through A Lot

Throughout most of “Severance” season 1, it was Mark’s inner self (innie) who appeared more relatable due to his evident struggles. While his outer self (outie) had control over his inner self’s destiny, the innie found himself trapped in a nightmarish office environment with minimal autonomy to pursue his own desires. However, as the story unfolded in season 2, the innie also began to chart his own course rather than blindly following the path set for him by Lumon. He developed feelings for Helly and actively worked on establishing a life within the Lumon building for himself.

As a cinephile, I found myself constantly questioning which version of the character truly deserved a life outside the screen. Initially, the inner character’s heart-wrenching predicament evoked deep compassion from me. However, as the story unfolded in season 2, his depth and complexity became more apparent.

On the other hand, the outer character appeared to be complicit due to his detachment and ignorance of his inner self’s suffering in earlier seasons. But as we delved deeper into season 2, his unwavering determination to save his wife, Gemma, started to make him a more endearing figure for me. This shift in the characters’ dynamics left me pondering who deserved a real-life existence more – a question that lingered throughout my viewing experience.

Due to the evolving duality between Mark’s characters in “Severance”, many viewers found themselves divided when the inner Mark started acting somewhat self-centered towards the end of season 2. It’s not hard to see why some questioned his choice to remain at Lumon, but it’s important to remember that he was just as much a victim as the outer Mark. Before he made his life-altering decision in season 2, the inner Mark had been voiceless and trapped in a life he didn’t choose. For a long time, he felt powerless and oppressed, similar to the outer Mark, before trying to gain some control over his own life.

Mark’s Innie’s Decision Proves The Adam Scott Character May Never Get A Happy Ending

Only One Of The Two Personas Can Ultimately Win

In the finale of Severance season 2, it’s clear that Mark finds himself in an impossible predicament. If his inner self (innie) thrives and maintains its identity within the Lumon corporation, his outer self (outie) will never be able to reunite with his wife. Conversely, if the outie triumphs and persuades the innie to leave the Lumon office, the innie risks being erased entirely. In the storyline of Severance season 2, the outie contends that both entities could survive together if the reintegration process is successful.

From my perspective as an appreciative observer, it’s reasonable for the innie to contend that the outie, having lived longer, might hold more power even after reintegration. The reintegration process, as we’ve seen so far, has been fraught with uncertainties, which only intensifies the questions surrounding its potential future outcomes. It seems evident that Mark is destined for loss in whatever direction Severance‘s subsequent chapters take us. His narrative appears set to conclude on a poignant note, where one of his two personas may choose to make the selfless sacrifice of relinquishing control so that the other can persist and lead a regular life.
