Mark Wahlberg’s Instant Family Becomes Netflix Hit 7 Years Later with 82% RT Score

He is well-versed in comedies, having appeared in movies such as “Date Night,” “Ted,” and “Daddy’s Home.” But in 2018, he ventured into a new genre: the family comedy-drama titled “Instant Family.

The comedy-drama featuring Rose Byrne and Isabela Merced tells the story of a family attempting to adopt a single baby, only to end up adopting three siblings instead. This film has achieved great success and garnered positive feedback. Interestingly, it has recently gained renewed interest on Netflix, where it’s been ranked in the top charts for the past two weeks according to recent reports.

The movie just hit Netflix and managed to rank sixth in the weekly charts from May 12 to 18. Remarkably, it garnered an impressive 3.3 million views and was watched for a total of 6.6 million hours. What’s particularly noteworthy is that all these views were generated exclusively within the United States, where it debuted in third place domestically.

In its second week, the movie climbed a spot to take the second position, outperforming the fresh release “The Wild Robot”. Worldwide, it ranked fifth with approximately 5.3 million views and 10.6 million hours watched in total. Over a span of two weeks, this comedy-drama amassed a total viewership of 8.6 million.

The movie “Instant Family” was directed by Sean Anders, who collaborated with John Morris on the screenplay. Among its cast members were Gustavo Quiroz, Julianna Gamiz, along with Margo Martindale, Julie Hagerty, Tig Notaro, and Octavia Spencer.

The movie earned favorable feedback, boasting a Certified Fresh 82% rating from critics and an almost identical 83% score from the audience on Popcornmeter. Moreover, it raked in $119.7 million at the box office while only spending $48 million to produce, making it a financially successful film.

Instant Family Was Based on a True Story

This comedy-drama narrates the journey of Pete Wagner (Wahlberg) and Ellie Wagner (Byrne), a couple eager to grow their family via the foster care system. Yet, they encountered more than anticipated when they adopted not one but three siblings: Lizzy (Merced), Juan (Gustavo Escobar), and Lita (Julianna Gamiz). Remarkably, this plot twist was drawn from the actual life of the movie’s director, who, together with his wife, made a similar decision in real life to foster and adopt three children.

In an exclusive conversation off-screen, the director and his spouse shared their struggles at the onset of adopting the siblings. They emphasized that the movie not only portrays the humorous aspects of those difficult periods but also takes viewers through the journey towards feeling like a family. The director added, “Our aim is to shed light on the process, making it clear that they’re just part of our family.

In his interview with the magazine in November 2024, Anders elaborated that the movie provided an exceptionally accurate portrayal of the adoption process he experienced. He clarified, “Our adoption classes and support groups were quite diverse, including a mix of various individuals.
