During the 2023 Writers Guild strike, actor Mark Ruffalo and policy analyst Matt Stoller connected on a video call and realized they shared a concern: the increasing concentration of power in Hollywood. They both believed that the industry’s problems stemmed from a few massive companies being able to prioritize profits over the well-being of writers and the quality of content. Now, in a new opinion piece for the New York Times, Ruffalo and Stoller are warning about the potential merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. They argue there’s still a chance to prevent the merger and are urging state attorneys general to take action, specifically by blocking it based on antitrust laws – something they fear federal regulators won’t do.
As a movie lover, I really appreciated Ruffalo’s message to everyone in the film and TV world – we need to keep supporting each other, like with that open letter from last month. He and Stoller explained that having more studios actually means more competition, which is good because it encourages studios to take chances on projects like my favorites, I Know This Much Is True and Spotlight. They believe competition creates opportunities for truly bold and brave storytelling, and that having multiple ways to get films and shows made and distributed is key to keeping those riskier, more important stories alive. They also think that even though a lot of people in Hollywood might quietly disagree with this merger but are scared to say anything, this growing group of supporters will eventually make a real difference – not just in entertainment, but maybe even beyond that.
