These days, people have very different opinions about the Star Wars movies, and this even applies to Mark Hamill’s own family.
Mark Hamill is best known as part of the original Star Wars trio, alongside Harrison Ford and the late Carrie Fisher. All three actors returned for the more recent Disney sequels. Hamill’s most recent work as Luke Skywalker was providing the voice for Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy. He recently shared what his children think about the Star Wars films.
For Mark Hamill, Star Wars is deeply personal. His oldest son, Nathan, was born while The Empire Strikes Back was being filmed and visited the set of Return of the Jedi as a young child. Hamill told USA Today that Nathan was completely captivated by the experience, even getting to sit in Yoda’s house and on the Emperor’s throne because he was small enough to fit!
The actor recalled being allowed to play with props on set, reminiscing about a similar experience on The Muppet Show. He thought it was a fantastic opportunity for the child involved and admitted to feeling a little envious. Hamill and his wife, Marilou York, welcomed their second son, Griffin, the same year Return of the Jedi was released, followed by their daughter, Chelsea, a few years later.
Mark Hamill described his son, Griffin, as thoughtful and serious, sharing that Griffin doesn’t enjoy the Star Wars films because he finds them too focused on profit. Hamill noted that his daughter is a fan, and each of his children has unique tastes. Interestingly, all of Hamill’s children work in creative fields – Chelsea even assists her father – and they’ve all appeared as extras in some of the Star Wars movies.
Ever since Star Wars, Mark Hamill has become one of my favorite voice actors! He’s incredible as The Joker in so many animated Batman shows and movies, and he’s done tons of other great animated work too. Plus, he still takes on really interesting live-action roles. I was especially blown away by his performance as ‘The Major’ in The Long Walk, which came out in 2025. It’s based on a classic Stephen King novel, and Hamill really brought that villain to life!
The Star Wars universe continued to grow, but opinions became more divided after Disney took over. The sequel trilogy wasn’t consistently well-received, and while many people grew up watching Mark Hamill in Star Wars, even his own children have mixed feelings about the franchise.
