Mark Hamill Says Carrie Fisher Told Him to ‘Embrace’ His ‘Star Wars’ Fame After Downplaying It While Performing on Broadway: ‘Get Over Yourself. You’re Luke Skywalker’

Mark Hamill says Carrie Fisher once had to remind him where he came from.

In a recent chat on NPR’s “Fresh Air,” Hamill recalled that Fisher urged him to wholeheartedly embrace his “Star Wars” background when he failed to acknowledge it in a Broadway playbill.

Mark Hamill shared that [Carrie Fisher] attended one of his Broadway performances. In the playbill, his biography detailed his theater credits and concluded with, ‘He’s also recognized for a collection of space movies.’ To which she replied, ‘Why don’t you ever mention “Star Wars”?’ I explained, ‘I aim to demonstrate that I have a significant background in theater,’ to which she retorted, ‘Snap out of it! You’re Luke Skywalker. I’m Princess Leia. Don’t shy away from it.’

He went on, “I could understand her point of view somewhat, as it made me question, ‘What unique space do I hold that others don’t?’ In essence, she helped clarify things for me.

Together with Harrison Ford playing Han Solo, Fisher and Hamill formed the main trio of the original “Star Wars” trilogy, which ended in 1983. Since then, this epic space opera has grown into one of the most cherished and financially successful movie series ever made in cinema history.

Despite cherishing his past experiences in a distant galaxy, Hamill has expressed that he doesn’t intend to resume the character of Luke Skywalker at this time.

I’m deeply thankful to George [Lucas] for allowing me to be involved in it way back when. It was during the modest days when George referred to ‘Star Wars’ as ‘the most expensive low-budget film ever made.’ He said this, but we never imagined it would turn into an enduring franchise and a significant part of pop culture. However, my time has passed, and I’m grateful for that experience, but now I believe the focus should be on the future and the new characters.
