Mario Kart World Video Suggests There Are 84 Characters, Including Costume Variants

After the unveiling of Mario Kart World for the upcoming Switch 2, Nintendo provided additional gameplay insights during a Treehouse Live broadcast, shedding further light on the game’s details.

A user named BearUNLV shared a piece from the broadcast displaying the character selection screen in Mario Kart World. The screen has three rows with four characters each, making a total of twelve characters on one page. Additionally, there are seven tabs visible at the bottom of the screen. If each tab contains 12 characters as well, it implies that an impressive number of 84 characters are available in Mario Kart World.

After that, another video from IGN showcases the game’s characters and outfits, totaling 60 (with variations such as Gondolier Luigi and Yakuta Peach included). In contrast to the original Nintendo video, this IGN clip presents only five tabs instead of seven.

As a point of comparison, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch boasts a total of 36 characters, both from the original game and DLC additions. However, it hasn’t been definitively stated whether Mario Kart World will have 84 characters; since we haven’t seen the complete character lineup yet, the exact number is still uncertain. Given that Mario Kart World seems to be positioning itself as a larger version of the classic game, it wouldn’t be unexpected if it featured more characters.

The recently released teaser for Mario Kart World hints that the game will offer at least 28 different tracks grouped into seven sets, in addition to 24 unique vehicles. What’s notable is that these vehicles appear to be pre-built in Mario Kart World, meaning players no longer need to choose and assemble individual car parts.

One significant query yet to be addressed about Mario Kart World is whether it will feature Downloadable Content (DLC) characters and tracks similar to what was available in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

A different clip from the occasion displays the DK Spaceport stage, featuring an end section inspired by the iconic 1981 Donkey Kong arcade game. In this video you’re about to watch, racers must skillfully dodge barrels that a massive DK hurls towards them just as they reach the finish line. Given that up to 24 players can participate simultaneously in this event (the highest number ever for the Mario Kart series), the competition could become quite hectic!

At the culmination of the DK Spaceport course in Mario Kart World, they’ve re-imagined the vintage arcade game.
It makes for an exciting finish to the track, particularly when numerous racers are attempting to avoid barrels simultaneously.

It seems that Mario Kart World is a bigger version of the classic Mario Kart series, and as expected, it will come at a higher price – approximately $80. This is around $10-$20 above the typical cost for AAA games currently in the market. Industry experts argue that such price hikes are crucial for maintaining the long-term viability of the video game industry.
