Mario Kart World Is Not An Open-World Game, Nintendo Says

Mario Kart World 2 on the Switch offers a fresh take on the series by incorporating linked courses and a free-roaming option, however, Nintendo emphasizes that it should not be mistaken as an “open-world” game.

As a game developer working on the Mario Kart series since the release of Mario Kart Wii in 2008, I’d like to clarify something: we don’t refer to our development process as “open-world” within our team.

As a gamer, I’ve been wondering: Why isn’t that term fitting well for Mario Kart World according to Yabuki? He mentioned the term seems somewhat vague for Nintendo to fully adopt it. Yabuki described Mario Kart World as an expansive, interconnected universe, but it still requires some classic gameplay elements to keep it familiar and engaging.

Mario Kart World deviates from previous series games in a unique way, as it features interlinked courses enabling seamless transitions between races. Players have the freedom to meander through the game world on their own or with companions. Additionally, there are challenges known as P Switch missions and hidden collectibles scattered throughout the map to discover.

In other updates, Nintendo has shared details about the fan-loved Cow character and revealed the time it takes to travel across the entire map. If you’re a fan of quirky characters, Mario Kart World could be just the game for you.

On June 5th, Mario Kart World debuts as an initial game for the Switch 2. If you manage to find it in stock, you can save money on the game by opting for the $500 Switch 2 bundle that includes Mario Kart World.
