Mario Kart World Could Have Ditched These Two Iconic Items

In a recent interview, producer Kosuke Yabuki revealed that some staple features in Mario Kart, such as the green shell and banana peel items, weren’t guaranteed to make a comeback for Mario Kart on Nintendo Switch 2. The team at Nintendo re-evaluated all aspects of Mario Kart during their decision-making process, even contemplating removal of these popular items.

As a devoted fan, I’ve pondered over the thought-provoking statement made by Yabuki during his chat with GamesRadar. Essentially, he shared that the dedicated team behind Mario Kart World grappled with the question: “Is it still relevant to incorporate this item in our game?” Although they eventually chose not to include it, their careful consideration of traditional Mario Kart elements adds a layer of depth to the game’s design process.

Regarding the iconic green shell, Yabuki pointed out that it’s long been associated with Mario Kart, a connection stretching back through memory. However, Nintendo aimed to ensure its relevance in Mario Kart: World as well.

He proposed, “When contemplating if simply tossing something over the track is adequate, for instance, racers like Mario can ride on the railings, shouldn’t we allow the shell to glide over the rails too? In evaluating each feature, we’ve examined its specifications and determined whether they should stay as they were or if we should modify and introduce a new aspect to them.

In Mario Kart World, both bananas and green shells serve versatile roles, allowing players to employ them strategically in either offense or defense. These iconic elements have been a staple of the series for quite some time. Besides these, there are many returning items from previous Mario Kart games, such as mushrooms, stars, red shells, lightning bolts, Bullet Bills, and Blue shells. The new additions to the item roster in Mario Kart World include hammers, mega mushrooms, feathers, and Kamek’s magic.
