During the Switch 2 unveiling, Mario Kart 9 was officially disclosed by Nintendo during their live stream this week – it’s now known as Mario Kart World. The latest peek at the kart-racing game displayed a variety of familiar characters set to race, including our beloved character Mario, various residents of the Mushroom Kingdom, and other racers such as Donkey Kong.
Mario Kart World serves as the debut game for the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, with further information being unveiled in a dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation scheduled for April 17th.
Mario Kart World seems to be a significant leap forward from Mario Kart 8, boasting an impressive capacity for 24 racers simultaneously – a record in the franchise. The game also showcases fresh vehicle options, such as jet skis and jets, with players now able to perform tricks like grinding on rails and defying gravity by flipping over walls. In addition, Mario Kart World features dynamic day-night cycles and weather conditions that shift during races. Players are encouraged to explore off-road areas extensively, as stated during the presentation by Nintendo.

In the revival of the traditional Grand Prix, we have the Knockout Tour added as well. This mode involves global races with designated checkpoints; any player lagging behind at these checkpoints gets eliminated. Additionally, there’s a Free Roam option where players can explore and drive around freely, capturing stunning views and snapping photos with friends along the journey.
The upcoming Mario Kart 9 game faces a substantial challenge, being the successor to one of Nintendo’s all-time best-selling games, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. To date, as of December 31, 2024, Mario Kart 8 has achieved an impressive sales figure of 67 million units on Switch, outperforming other top-grossing titles such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons (47.44 million units), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (35.88 million units), and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (32.62 million units).
