After 36 seasons, is there anything left to discuss about “The Simpsons” that hasn’t already been discussed? Perhaps, especially if we consider Pig Latin! Indeed, this legendary animated comedy series continues to elicit the same astonished and puzzled responses from viewers even with its latest season finale, “Estranger Things.” (Dun-dun-dunnnn!) This episode, a forward-looking installment, took an unexpected turn by writing off Marge Simpson.
The episode, centering on Lisa and Bart’s relationship as siblings, led to a typical mix of genuine astonishment, over-the-top reactions, trolling, and outright rejection online. This only made me even more eager (and a little anxious) for the return of King of the Hill, scheduled for 2025 TV lineup.
Marge’s Death, While Touching, Ultimately Doesn’t Mean Anything Longterm
In The Simpsons, the rules of continuity are as changeable and flexible as the gooey deposits found in Lake Springfield. Character deaths, particularly notable ones like Bleeding Gums Murphy and barfly Larry Dalrymple, are examples of such changes. However, let’s not forget instances where characters were believed to be deceased, such as Dr. Marvin Monroe, who later returned, explaining he had been very ill. This suggests a certain level of flexibility in the show’s narrative.
It’s common knowledge that the flash-forwards in “The Simpsons” aren’t as closely tied to the show’s main narrative as regular episodes. They don’t aim to depict real life any more than the show’s supposed predictions about the future. This is acceptable because viewers have been aware of this since 1989, and animated series typically haven’t yet delved into fully serialized storytelling.
At times, it’s essential to encounter change in situations that once seemed impossible, as it lends depth and significance to our experiences. Just as no one wishes to play baseball with the same skill level for years without progression, nor does anyone desire to eat the same meal day after day without altering the recipe. Similarly, I don’t find satisfaction in watching a cherished character suffer a fake death merely to explore an unattainable storyline, serving only to evoke fleeting emotions. It’s not as though Bart and Lisa will remember their disagreement in a way that impacts their present lives.
To truly stir up my feelings about the revival of “King of the Hill”, I require a genuine cause-and-effect scenario to take place, as this stimulation fuels my exceptional enthusiasm.

King Of The Hill’s Revival Reflects A Changing World
It’s likely no one would have questioned the return of “King of the Hill” for its 14th season if it had stuck to the same format as when it ended on Fox in 2009-2010. The saying “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” applies here, suggesting that a streaming service might have ordered more episodes without significant changes. However, creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels chose to evolve the show instead of simply repeating themselves.
As the fresh season of “King of the Hill” becomes available on Hulu, viewers will reacquaint themselves with Hank and Peggy Hill as they adjust to their old home in Arlen, Texas, following seven years abroad for Hank’s work. Bobby is now a 21-year-old aspiring chef sporting an attractive patchwork of facial hair. The gang has a new addition, a friend made during Hank’s absence, and this time around, you can expect some drone action!
I don’t necessarily need to know how each character employs modern technologies, but my curiosity is piqued about Dale’s thoughts on A.I. conspiracies. What draws me in is the prospect of witnessing a completely fresh era for something as familiar as our storyline. Moreover, I appreciate that every change and additional detail will remain consistent across episodes, with no essential narrative elements being altered or contradicted in future episodes (i.e., not subject to retconning).
I’ve always loved The Simpsons and will continue to do so, but currently, another show, King of the Hill, has captured my attention. Apologies to Milhouse for any temporary allegiance shift.
