Marathon players want nerf to “busted” attachment that’s ruining matches

Marathon players want the game to adjust thermal scopes before it officially releases. They say these scopes make it too easy for opponents to accurately snipe them from long distances.

Marathon’s Server Slam was a first look at Bungie’s new extraction shooter for many players. While there was some criticism online, the event was largely positive, boosting the game to the top of Steam’s sales charts and attracting a strong player base despite being a beta test.

Throughout the testing period, Bungie continually made changes based on what players were saying, like increasing the number of players in each game to create more player-versus-player combat.

Despite the progress made, fans still have a few concerns they’d like to see resolved before the game launches on March 5th, with thermal scopes being a major one.

Marathon players say OP thermal scopes need a nerf

As the Server Slam neared its end, players began to notice how incredibly strong certain attachments were. The detailed environments and visuals in Marathon can sometimes make it hard to see distant enemies, but a thermal scope easily overcomes this, allowing clear vision through all the visual effects.

Sniper rifles are very effective against enemies with low shields, letting you easily eliminate Runners from a safe distance.

It appears there’s a potential issue with thermal scopes for snipers in the game Marathon. A player, @Nirvous_, reported the problem almost immediately at the start of a match – within the first 10 seconds.

This has led many players to call for a substantial nerf, or possibly even their removal.

One Marathon player, gmeiners, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the addition of thermal scopes, calling it potentially the worst design choice they’ve ever seen in a player-versus-player game. They believe the scopes are far too powerful, drastically changing effective weapon ranges depending on whether a player is using thermal vision or not. Gmeiners suggests the scopes should be either incredibly rare or removed from the game entirely.

“Thermal basically makes it able to spot people across the map,” said streamer ModernWarzone.

One Reddit user expressed strong frustration, stating that thermal sights give players a significant and unfair advantage. They explained that even skilled players with regular sniper rifles have almost no chance against someone using thermal optics.

You can avoid being detected by enemy heat vision (thermals) using Signal Jammers, which briefly hide you from view. But this only works if you can predict when an enemy is aiming at you, and that’s not always easy to do.

Whether this problem will be fixed before the release of the Marathon update is still unknown. Bungie plans to launch an update on day one, but they haven’t said exactly what it will change.
