As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can attest to the fact that developer-community interaction is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s fantastic to see developers like Grzegorz Styczen actively engaging with their player base and implementing changes based on feedback. It adds a sense of ownership and investment in the game for us players.

Despite the frequent updates and additions by Manor Lords‘ creator, Grzegorz Styczen, concerns have been raised about the lack of strategic planning in the game’s development. To address these allegations, the developer has chosen to provide some insight.

Development with the players’ wishes

The discussion expanded under one of the posts on X. A comment surfaced there asserting that Styczen overly concentrates on issues that are insignificant, neglecting the most crucial ones – like castles, cavalry, or AI. The dev didn’t bury his head in the sand and issued a response.

I always focus on issues that people comment on/DM the most. “We want fishing” I add fishing. “We want butchers” I add butchers. Pigs. Trade overview. Stuff like balance or systems refactoring usually it’s not super cool to rework or impressive to show off.. but it’s honest work.

It appears that Styczen has been making adjustments following suggestions from the community. For instance, we’ve noticed changes concerning beer and water distribution, as well as updates on the supply-demand system at the end of October. However, it’s challenging to find a universally acceptable solution in such situations since there will always be someone who may not be entirely satisfied with the outcome.

Despite this, players seemed to fully understand Styczen’s explanation and swiftly proposed enhancements they desired for Manor Lords. Specifically, user AdiWoolwich’s post, advocating for features like AI-driven living cities, diplomacy, operational rivers, and a fresh map, garnered widespread approval.

Thanks for the nomination

Apart from being mentioned, Grzegorz Styczen also touched upon the subject of The Game Awards 2024 ceremony. It’s important to recall that Manor Lords was put forward for recognition in not one but two categories: Best Sim/Strategy Game and Best Debut Indie Game.

Appreciate your generous nominations for The Game Awards 2024! We’re aware that our game is currently in its early stages and development doesn’t stop here, but I can’t express enough gratitude. My heartfelt hope is that one day a strategy game like ours will take the Game of the Year title.
